The African Independent Television has reacted to allegations that it closed down its Presidential poll website because the result was favouring a particular candidate.
The TV station said that contrary to allegations, it closed down the poll because it discovered that some IP addresses were voting repeatedly for a particular candidate, it said that further investigations traced a particular IP address to a software programmed to vote for a particular candidate continuously.

APC give reasons why Buhari will boycott BON presidential debate

The Presidential campaign of the All Progressives Congress has said its candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) and his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, will not participate in the Broadcast Organisation of Nigeria organised electioneering debate.

According to the APC Presidential campaign, its candidate was staying away from the event because of the unhidden bias and campaign of calumny by key organisers of the programme, against the corporate political interest of the APC.

This position was contained in a statement signed by Mallam Garba Shehu, Director Media and Publicity of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation, in Abuja, on Thursday.

APC said the Nigeria Election Debate Group -powered debate, was fraught with fundamental errors from the outset, by wearing the toga of government control, especially being composed mainly of agencies and allies of the incumbent People’s Democratic Party’s administration.

The statement partly read, “A salutary inspection of the composition of NEGD brings into focus the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, National Television Authority, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria and the Africa Independent Television (owned by a PDP chieftain).

“And going by the avalanche of inflammatory statements, misinformation and blatant lies being propagated by some of these media against our Party and candidates contrary to the Koffi Annan brokered Abuja Peace Accord, and the failure of these aggressors to desist and apologise, have left the APC Campaign with no option than to steer clear of any premeditated smear campaign that could be inimical to our prospective electoral success.”

The campaign spokesman further explained that the boycott by the APC should not be seen as disrespect to Nigerian voters, or an alibi for the party to dodge public scrutiny; but it must be viewed as an honourable right not to consent to any activity that could distract, demean, denigrate or derail the fast-moving train of the party.

Shehu noted that the APC remains a party of progressive intellectuals, genuine technocrats, successful businessmen and women, and most of all, eminent and courteous people of honour who would never condescend to the level of sadistic gutter propaganda, all in the name of political exigency and crass opportunism.

He pointed out that many Government-controlled media have clipped the wings of APC promotional advertisements on one excuse on the other adding that, until a court upturned their decision recently, the Nigerian Communications Commission shutdown some telecom portals for soliciting legitimate campaign funds from members of the public for APC.

Shehu also said, “Aside, elements close to sitting President Goodluck Jonathan have commissioned series of derogatory and death threat advertorials against the person, family and associates of the opposition leader, General Muhammadu Buhari.

This, he said, prompted the APC to send letters of complaint to the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of State Security, Advertisers Practitioners of Nigeria, Independent National Electoral Commission and the erring media that published or aired such offensive adverts or documentaries.

He expressed regret that none of our letters of protest has been attended to by the authorities.

Shehu stressed that whatever the incumbent President wants to do with the instrument of state to harass members of the opposition into humiliating submission would not work.

He maintained that the APC/Buhari campaign is now a people’s movement. The more they try to rubbish it, the more popular we are with the populace.

“We are not shadow-chasers or moonwalkers. The APC is concerned mainly with the lack of unity and security in Nigeria; plus the growing decimation of lives, property and territory of our great country due to preventable insurgency; the slumbering economy; decaying educational system; absence of jobs; poor public health; and the cancerous institutionalisation of corruption in our national life. You can’t fool the people all the time. Nigerians will vote out their oppressors come February 14.” He said.

Five ex-Jang commissioners dump PDP for APC

Five former commissioners in the administration of Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State have defected from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party to the opposition All Progressives Congress.

The six commissioners, who were received at the commencement of the governorship campaign rally of the party governorship candidate of APC in Plateau State, Mr. Simon Lalong, were former Commissioner for Information, Mr. Nuhu Gagara; Special Duties, Mr. Danny Ajik; Environment, Nankin Bagudu; Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Benehel Andong; Agriculture, Mr. Na-Allah Mutbam, and Special Adviser Media, Mr. Dan Manjang.

They were joined by former PDP governorship aspirants, Prof. Longmas Wapmuk and Mr. Godfrey Miri, and former Minister of State for Sciences and Technology Mrs. Pauline Tallen, among others.

Speaking at the rally, Lalong, while bemoaning the debt profile of the state, which he put at over N100bn, said there was a need to rescue the state from total collapse.

He promised to lay a solid foundation of the development for the state.

According to him, if elected into office, he will ensure that salaries of civil servant, who are the engine room of government, is paid as at when due and creation of job opportunities for the youth, who are the leaders of tomorrow.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Gargara said their group was made up of men and women of integrity, who had worked at various times and in various capacities in Jang administration for the progress of Plateau State and Nigeria as a whole.

“In the light of above, we have decided to jump out of the sinking ship of the Peoples Democratic Party and declare for the All Progressives Congress and have decided to work for the victory of APC at all the elections in the state and at the federal level,” he said.

He said the group also intended to use its platform to break the tag of APC as a party of Muslims, which he noted some mischief makers were using to confuse the people of Plateau State.

PDP lifts Tukur’s suspension

The Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday announced the lifting of the suspension of a former Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur. National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu'azu, announced the lifting of the suspension at the presidential rally of the party in Yola, the Adamawa State capital. Tukur was suspended in December 2014 for dragging the party before the court in his attempt to reclaim the chairmanship of the party, where he was forced to resign in January last year.

C Ronaldo banned for two matches

Cristiano Ronaldo has been given a two-match ban following his red card for kicking out at an opponent during Real Madrid’s La Liga clash with Cordoba on Saturday, Sky Sports reports.

Ronaldo was unable to make an impact in the match and his frustration saw him first lash out with his hand at Jose Crespo, which the referee missed, and then minutes later kick out at Edimar, for which he was sent off.

Real won 2-1 thanks to a late Gareth Bale penalty and Ronaldo apologised on Twitter after the game.

He said: “I apologise to everyone and especially to Edimar for my thoughtless act in today’s game.”

The Spanish league has announced the Portugal winger has been suspended for Real’s next two La Liga matches against Real Sociedad and Sevilla but will be available for the derby with Atletico Madrid.

Cristiano Ronaldo was sent-off for kicking an opponent as Gareth Bale’s late penalty earned Real Madrid a dramatic 2-1 win at Cordoba.

Saturday’s dismissal could have cost Madrid dear, with the game locked at 1-1 and Cordoba having already wasted a number of chances to regain the lead given to them by Nabil Ghilas’ second-minute penalty.

Figo wants FIFA presidency

A former Ballon d’Or winner Luis Figo has announced his intention to stand for the FIFA presidency.

Portugal’s most-capped player is the fifth man to declare an interest in opposing Sepp Blatter in the May election – and he claims he has the five nominations required to stay in the race beyond Thursday’s deadline.

The Scottish Football Association are among five FIFA members to nominate Dutch FA boss Michael van Praag, while Sky sources understand the Football Association will endorse the candidacy of Jordanian Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein.

Jerome Champagne and former Newcastle winger David Ginola are the other potential candidates, although Champagne admitted this month he was not guaranteed to win the necessary support while Ginola has been forced to deny his campaign is a publicity stunt. Speaking exclusively to CNN Figo said, “I care about football, so what I’m seeing regarding the image of FIFA – not only now but in the past years – I don’t like it.

“If you search FIFA on the internet you see the first word that comes out: scandal, not positive words. It’s that we have to change first and try to improve the image of FIFA. Football deserves much better than this.

PDP hacked into my Twitter account – Buhari’s daughter

Zahra, the daughter of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has accused the Peoples Democratic Party of hacking into her Twitter account.

On her Twitter handle, she said the ruling party used somebody to gain an unlawful access into her account to post a grammatical blunder aimed at embarrassing her.

The aspiring first daughter, who now has a new account, said she was shocked that the PDP could stoop so low to gain a political advantage.

She said, “The PDP had someone hack into my Twitter account to post a grammatical blunder. This is so uncalled-for.

“Even if I tweeted a grammatical blunder, I didn’t say ‘There is God o’ like our First Lady said.”

She, however, did not give further details to buttress the allegation.

She had previously frowned on the actions of the party, saying Nigerians were no longer ready to tolerate its excesses.

Since her comeback, Zahra’s fans are pouring in by the second to reconnect with her on the new account – @ZahraBuhari. She has also become more active on the medium.

Introducing the account, she told her fans, “I am as lovely as my father’s lovely heart.”

The United Kingdom-based undergraduate, who shot into limelight earlier in the month when her photographs appeared on the social media, said people “now think I am faking in my own world.”

On Wednesday, she posted a series of tweets, insisting that Nigerians could not continue to endure the pains bad leadership has inflicted on them.

Noting that change was inevitable, she called on individuals to support her father to bring the desired change as the country approaches crucial general elections.

“Change is the only thing that is permanent. We need change.

“If school certificate defines a good president, don’t you think President Jonathan’s PhD ought to have fought insecurity and corruption,” she tweeted.

Zahra also sent photographs of a campaign train of the APC, saying, “This is how far we can go to get a change. Do not watch, make a move and vote for change.”

Shortly before closing her former Twitter account, she had described the debate on the whereabouts of her father’s certificates as a “misplaced priority.”

Amid her soaring fame, some people had however warned that her sudden celebrity was a bad publicity for Buhari.

For instance, Arikor Ogonnaya argued that her overnight celebrity status would do her father more bad than good.

Vigilante fires at Amosun’s convoy second attack on APC governors, Borno and Ogun state respectively

A member of Ogun State vigilante group on Wednesday night fired gun shots at the convoy of the governor,   Ibikunle Amosun, at Agbado in the Ifo Local Government Area of the state.

Amosun, his aides and some members of the Ogun State executive council as well as supporters of the All Progressives Congress were on campaign tour of the council area when the shooting occurred at about 10.00pm.

Health tip: Caring for a cut or scrape

When you get a cut or scrape, proper care can help reduce the risk of infection and speed healing.

The American Academy of Family Physicians offers these tips:

Use cool water to clean any cut, scrape or puncture.

Gently clean the skin surrounding the wound with soap and a washcloth.

Try not to get soap inside the wound to avoid irritation.

If there is dirt in the wound after washing, use tweezers sterilised with rubbing alcohol to carefully remove it.

If the wound isn’t likely to rub against something or get dirty, leave it dry and uncovered to help it heal.

Sugary drinks linked to earlier onset of menstrual periods

Girls who frequently consume sugary drinks tend to start their menstrual periods earlier than girls who do not, according to new research published online Jan 28 in Human Reproduction.

In the first study to look at the relation between sugar-sweetened drinks and the age at which girls have their first period, researchers followed 5583 girls, aged 9-14 years between 1996 and 2001 and found that those who drank more than 1.5 servings of sugary drinks a day had their first period 2.7 months earlier than those who consumed two or fewer such drinks a week. This effect was independent of the girls’ body mass index (BMI), height, total food intake and other lifestyle factors such as physical activity.

The findings are important not only because of the growing problem of childhood obesity in a number of developed countries, but also because starting periods earlier is linked to an increased risk of breast cancer later in life.

Karin Michels (ScD, PhD), Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School (Boston, USA), who led the research, said: “Our study adds to increasing concern about the wide-spread consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks among children and adolescents in the USA and elsewhere. The main concern is about childhood obesity, but our study suggests that age of first menstruation (menarche) occurred earlier, independently of body mass index, among girls with the highest consumption of drinks sweetened with added sugar. These findings are important in the context of earlier puberty onset among girls, which has been observed in developed countries and for which the reason is largely unknown.

In the paper, the authors conclude: “Our findings suggest that frequent consumption of SSBs [sugar-sweetened beverages] may be associated with earlier menarche. A one-year decrease in age at menarche is estimated to increase the risk of breast cancer by five per cent thus, a 2.7 month-decrease in age at menarche likely has a modest impact on breast cancer risk. The amount of SSBs consumed by girls in our highest category of consumption, more than 1.5 servings per day, however, is likely low compared with consumption in certain other populations, in which we would expect an even more dramatic decrease in age at menarch.Most importantly, the public health significance of SSB consumption at age at menarche, and possibly breast cancer, should not be over-looked, since, unlike most other predictors of menarche, SSB consumption can be modified.”

The girls in the study were part of the Growing up Today Study, which follows 16,875 children of Nurses’ Health Study II participants living in all 50 states of the USA. At the time of joining the study none of the girls had started their periods; by the end of the study all but three per cent (159) had started menstruation. The researchers used questionnaires to ask the girls about their diet at several points during the study, including how frequently, on average, they drank a serving of different types of drinks: one can or glass of soda or diet soda (soda being carbonated drinks such as colas), one glass of non-carbonated fruit drinks (fruit mixes such as lemonade, punch and other non-carbonated fruit drinks), or one glass, can or bottle of sweetened ice tea. All of these drinks have sugar added to them in the form of sucrose, glucose, corn syrup etc, while the colas and iced tea also contain caffeine. The researchers also investigated diet sodas and fruit juice to assess the impact of artificially or naturally sweetened drinks.

Good sleep in middle age has benefits

Sleeping well during middle age may be an “investment” that leads to better mental functioning later in life, a new review finds.

It’s known that sound sleep boosts memory and learning in young and middle-aged people, but many people begin to have sleep problems as they move into their senior years, the researchers noted.

That raises an “alluring question,” said Michael Scullin, director of the Sleep Neuroscience and Cognition Laboratory at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

“If sleep benefits memory and thinking in young adults but is changed in quantity and quality with age, then the question is whether improving sleep might delay — or reverse — age-related changes in memory and thinking,” he said in a university news release.

“It’s the difference between investing up front rather than trying to compensate later,” he added.

Scullin analyzed 50 years of sleep research.

“We came across studies that showed that sleeping well in middle age predicted better mental functioning 28 years later,” he said. Scullin’s team defined middle age as 30 to 60 years old.

While the researchers found an association between middle-age sleep and mental ability later in life, the study did not prove cause and effect.

The paper appears in the January issue of the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science.

People who live to age 85 may have slept nearly 250,000 hours, or more than 10,000 full days, Scullin said.

“People sometimes disparage sleep as ’lost’ time,” he noted.

However, even if the link between sleep and memory weakens with age, “sleeping well still is linked to better mental health, improved cardiovascular health and fewer, less severe disorders and diseases of many kinds,” Scullin said.

Drinking may raise risk of liver cirrhosis

Daily drinking increases the risk of alcohol-related liver cirrhosis, a new study found.

It’s generally believed that overall alcohol consumption is the major contributor to cirrhosis. But these new findings suggest that how often you pour yourself a cocktail or beer —as well as recent drinking —plays a significant role, the researchers said.

Cirrhosis, scarring of the liver, is the final phase of alcoholic liver disease, according to the US National Library of Medicine.

In men, drinking every day raised the risk for cirrhosis more than less frequent drinking.

And recent drinking, not lifetime alcohol consumption, was the strongest predictor of alcohol-related cirrhosis, the researchers reported online January 26 in the Journal of Hepatology.

“For the first time, our study points to a risk difference between drinking daily and drinking five or six days a week in the general male population, since earlier studies were conducted on alcohol misusers and patients referred for liver disease and compared daily drinking to ’binge pattern’ or ’episodic’ drinking,” said lead investigator Dr. Gro Askgaard, of the National Institute of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark.

“Since the details of alcohol-induced liver injury are unknown, we can only speculate that the reason may be that daily alcohol exposure worsens liver damage or inhibits liver regeneration,” Askgaard added in a journal news release.

For the study, researchers looked at data on nearly 56,000 people, aged 50 to 64, in Denmark.

Participants filled out food frequency questionnaires and answered questions about their lifestyle habits, including how much beer, wine or hard liquor they drank each week.

They were also asked to recall how much they drank, on average, in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s.

Of the total, 257 men and 85 women developed cirrhosis, the researchers found.

Up to a moderate level of weekly consumption, wine appeared to be associated with a lower risk than beer and liquor, the researchers said.

The same general trends were found in women, but no firm conclusions could be reached due to a lack of statistical significance, the study authors said.

Experts welcomed the report.

“This is a timely contribution about one of the most important, if not the most important risk factor for liver cirrhosis globally, because our overall knowledge about drinking patterns and liver cirrhosis is sparse and in part contradictory,” said Jurgen Rehm, director of social and epidemiological research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto.

Rehm, who was not involved with the study, said the report “not only increases our knowledge, but also raises questions for future research.”

However, “the question of binge drinking patterns and mortality is far from solved,” he added, saying there may be genetic differences or other factors not yet discovered that also play a role.

A man suspected to be behind the manufacture of explosives used in a series of Boko Haram suicide attacks has been arrested in North-East Nigeria, a senior police officer told AFP on Tuesday.The man, identified only as Ba’na, was held in the Arikime area of Potiskum after several weeks of surveillance, said the officer, who was involved in the Sunday arrest.
Potiskum, the commercial capital of Yobe State,has been hit by a wave of bombings in recent months, including a suicide attack on a secondary school in November 10 in which 58 people were killed.
On January 18, at least four people died in an attack on a bus station, while the previous weekend, two women wearing suicide vests killed six people at a market and two died in a car bombing outside a police station.The police officer, who asked not to be identified because he is not authorised to speak to the media, said Ba’na was in his mid-thirties and had admitted making the bombs.

Theophilus Danjuma Wants Dokubo-Asari, Tompolo, Others Arrested

A former Minister of Defence, Theophilus
Danjuma, has demanded the immediate arrest of some former Niger Delta militants for threatening to plunge the country into war if President Goodluck Jonathan is not re-elected in the February 14 election.
He stated this on Wednesday in Kano during the commissioning of the multibillion naira Kwakwasiya city, one of the three mega cities built by the administration of Governor Rabi’u
Kwankwaso.
The leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, NDPVF, Mujahid Dokubo-Asari; Victor Ben Ebikabowei, aka, Boy Loaf; Government Ekpudomenowei, aka, Tompolo; and other militants had last Saturday vowed to ensure that President Goodluck Jonathan, wins the February
presidential election.The former militant leaders and their followers,who spoke at a meeting in Government House,Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, threatened to unleash violence on the country and take back Niger
Delta oil should the president lose the election.
They also said any attempt to dethrone Mr.
Jonathan would be seen as a direct attack on the Ijaw nation.Neither the Federal Government nor the president, who is also Ijaw as the militant leaders, has so far reacted to the threat.Describing the statements as “reckless,” Mr.Danjuma, a retired army general and former
Chief of Army Staff, who fought in the Nigerian civil war, said the threats by the militants were not only against national unity but also capable of plunging the country into war.
He asked the security agencies and the
government to immediately arrest them.
“You should arrest Asari Dokubo, Tompolo,
Boylop and other Niger Delta militants for
making reckless statements, which in any way does not mean keeping Nigeria as one entity and creating war situation,” he said.
The Nigeria Police Force and the State Security Service had recently threatened that they would move against anyone who makes inciting statements in the run up to the February elections.
But since the militants’ comments were reported on January 24, both security agencies are not known to have taken action.Addressing the Yenagoa meeting, Mr. Dokubo-Asari deplored the alleged intimidation being meted to the people of Ijaw stock in Nigeria,saying the people cannot take it any longer.He told his colleagues, “For every Goliath, God created a David. For every Pharoah, there is a
Moses. “We are going to war. Everyone of you should go and fortify yourself.”
Mr. Dokubo-Asari, who condemned the attack on Jonathan in the north in the ongoing presidential campaigns, maintained that the survival of the
Ijaw nation rests in the hands of the militants gathered at the meeting.
On his part, Boyloaf condemned the attack on President Jonathan in the north, saying nobody has the monopoly of violence.
He said there is nothing like one Nigeria, pointing out that oil is the only thing binding Nigeria’s diverse nationalities together.
While maintaining that President Jonathan would win the election, he however said if the north takes the power away from Mr. Jonathan, the people of the Niger Delta region would take their oil back.
He stressed the need for oneness of purpose
among the people, urging them to keep their grudges aside and face the present challenges facing the Ijaw nation with solidarity.”Keep grudges and sentiments apart. We are ready to match them bumper to bumper,” Boyloaf said.

Bird Flu now in 11 states – FG

The Federal Government on Wednesday said the H5N1 influenza virus, also known as bird flu, is now present in 11 states in Nigeria.
It confirmed the presence of the virus in four other states apart from the seven states earlier reported on January 22, 2015.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, outlined the additional states to include Oyo, Jigawa, Gombe and Imo.
He said the total number of birds exposed had risen to 232,385 with 51,444 mortalities recorded.

Jonathan, Mark knock Maku for dumping PDP

President Goodluck Jonathan; President of the Senate, David Mark; and a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ahmadu Ali, on Tuesday lashed out at a former Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, for dumping the PDP for the All Progressives Grand Alliance.

While Jonathan described Maku’s action as anti-party, Mark said the former minister was a liar while Ali described him as an ingrate.

They spoke at the Lafia Township Stadium during the PDP presidential rally.

Jonathan said there was no truth in the former minister’s claim that he (the President) encouraged him to join APGA.

The President said he could not be involved in anti-party activities.

Jonathan said he did not at any time have any discussion with him. He said he did not encourage Maku to join another party.

He said the PDP did not encourage anti-party activities and he, as the leader, would never flout the party’s rules and regulations.

Mark, on his part, said Maku had to apologise and retrace his steps before he could be accepted back to the party.

“Don’t be deceived by any son of yours that says he has been put in another party to run for the governorship. Mr. President is the PDP from top to bottom,” he said.

The Senate President said the North Central was solidly behind the President and would vote for him because he had brought democratic dividends to bear on the region.

Ali also described Maku as an ingrate, saying that despite using the platform of the party to rise to stardom, he jumped the ship because of greed.

He said the President had never asked anybody to join any party to canvass votes for him. He said Maku’s intention was to smear the image of Jonathan and portray him as a religious bigot.

He accused Maku of dropping the name of the President in his bid to realise his ambition, which he insisted would never happen because he lacked the required integrity.

Ali said Maku’s people now treat him with disdain because he did not portray leadership qualities.

Also at the rally, Jonathan said the person that would succeed him would be younger than him.

The President said that he was close to 60 years, adding that a younger person would succeed.

“Obasanjo was president at 70, Yar’Adua at 60 and me, close to 60. So, the next president must be younger than I,” Jonathan said.

UNILAG lifts ban on student unionism

Authorities of the University of Lagos have lifted the ban on student unionism in the institution.

This is coming 10 years after the proscription of student unionism in the university due to a violent demonstration.

Protesting students in 2005 destroyed the residence of the then VC, Prof. Oye Ibidapo-Obe, among many other property belonging to the university.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahmon Bello, announced the lifting of the ban during the institution’s matriculation on Friday. No fewer than 6, 644 were admitted to the school for the 2014/2015 academic session.

Bello, who said the students had learnt their lessons, noted that they would soon conduct a fresh poll to elect student representatives.

The VC said, “Having being satisfied that student unionism has regenerated itself to maturity after the unfortunate incident of 2005 that led to the suspension of student union activities and the recent endorsement of the University of Lagos Student Union Constitution, the management has approved the unbanning of student unionism in the university.”

Noting that the fresh opportunity would expose students to leadership development, Bello urged them not to return to the experience of “dark days.”

On the fresh students, the VC said they were among the over 51,931 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and 4,316 Direct Entry candidates that applied to study in the university.

He congratulated the students on the success and urged them to continue to strive for excellence.

He said, “I congratulate you all and through you, your parents on being lucky to make it via the selection process through which you have become undergraduates of the University of Lagos.

“There are only 6,644 of you, representing about 10 per cent of the total number of applicants who have fully scaled the registration procedure and who from this day have become bonafide students of the university.

“Gaining admission to the over 50-year-old UNILAG is not only noble but also glorious. It the first step of the journey that would determine your future. It requires determination, diligence, focus and resilience.

“I wish to encourage you all to work hard and distinguish yourselves in your academics. I urge you to aspire to be a UNILAG scholar.”

In all, 662 students matriculated in the faculty of Arts, 1,002 in Business Administration, 907 in Education, 675 in Engineering, 368 in Environmental Sciences, 465 in Law, 1,089 in Science, 879 in Social Sciences, 179 in Pharmacy, and 418 in the College of Medicine.

Eight killed as gunmen storm Libyan hotel

Gunmen stormed a luxury hotel in Libya’s capital, killing at least three guards and five foreigners, before blowing themselves up after being surrounded by security, officials said.

The attack, which included the use of a car bomb, struck the popular Corinthia Hotel, which sits along the Mediterranean Sea and is a major hub for diplomatic and government activity in Tripoli.

Mahmoud Hamza, commander of the so-called Special Deterrent Force, told private satellite television station al-Nabaa that the situation was “under control” on Tuesday afternoon.

He also said five foreigners were killed, without elaborating, according to a report from the AP news agency.

Issam al-Naass, a spokesman for security services, later told the AFP news agency that the gunmen blew themselves up after being surrounded on an upper floor.

“After being pursued and surrounded on the hotel’s 24th floor, the attackers detonated explosive belts they were wearing,” Naass said.

Another security official earlier said the gunmen killed three guards and took hostages, but had no further information on the captives’ identities. He also said that two commercial landmark towers behind the hotel were evacuated out of security concerns. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to reporters.

According to security sources at the scene, the attack began when four armed men detonated a car bomb in front of the hotel, killing a guard, before rushing inside.

Al Jazeera’s Mahmoud Abdelwahed, reporting from the scene in Tripoli, said security forces rescued eight US nationals.

“We know that [the gunmen] entered the hotel and they went straight to the upper floor. They used hand bombs and AK47s”.

Libya is mired in conflict between two rival governments – an internationally recognised one based in eastern Libya and a rival administration set up in Tripoli after an armed faction called Libya Dawn took over the capital.

Mary Fitzgerald, a journalist reporting from Libya, told Al Jazeera: “The incident today sends a message that Tripoli is not secure.”

“This will undermine the message that they are trying to send,” she said, referring to the government based in the Libyan capital.
