PDP, APC clash over Lagos poll results delay
The agent of the Peoples Democratic Party for the presidential election collation in Lagos State, Mr. Wahab Owokoniran, and his All Progressives Congress counterpart, Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, on Monday morning hotly disagreed during the collation exercise at the Independent National Electoral Commission Lagos office.
The quarrel began immediately the Collation Officer for Lagos State, Prof. Isaac Adewole, announced the suspension of the collation of the presidential poll till 8am.
Before Adewole suspended the collation of the result at 1.48am, electoral officers of four local government areas had submitted the results of their respective council areas, while the results for the remaining 16 local government areas had yet to be returned to the INEC office.
But immediately after Adewole, who is the Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, announced the suspension of the collation of the result, Owokoniran flared up and protested the decision, asking the state collation officer to explain the rationale behind the shift.
Owokoniran raised issues concerning non-arrival of the result of the election that was conducted on Saturday.
He said the result ought to have been brought to the INEC office.
According to him, result of many polling units, where PDP won, were manipulated in favour of APC.
Owokoniran also alleged that election did not take place in no fewer than 30 polling units in Epe Local Government Area of the state and yet result was declared for them.
“In some local government areas, election had been concluded two days ago. What could have delayed the collation? I suspect there are some discrepancies somewhere.
“We will not accept any result different from the one we have,” he said.
Owokoniran, however, submitted two petitions to the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Akin Orebiyi, questioning the electoral body’s collation process.
But Afikuyomi dismissed the claim, saying only INEC had the authority to announce the result of any election.
He asked Owokoniran to speak by facts, rather than making issues that could generate controversy.
Describing himself as one of those who framed the Electoral Act, Afikuyomi said, “Before we begin to make allegations about results being tampered with, without any substantial evidence or a single shred of fact, I think we must speak to facts and records.
“For instance, with regard to the result for Apapa Local Government Area, I have issues, but I will wait for us to get there. I think we watch the way we make claims because it can have serious implications.”

Wife stabs husband to death over APC,PDP presidential candidates in Lagos
A 26 year old pregnant wife simply identified as Onyiyechi has been arrested by the Lagos state police command for
stabbing her husband to death following an argument over the presidential candidates in Saturday's general election at their home in Ejigbo on Sunday March 29th.
According to a report by Vanguard, the husband was supporting PDP while Onyiyechi supported the APC. An
arguement over who would win the presidential election degenerated into a fight with the wife stabbing her husband
inside their one room apartment at the 81 military zone junction in Ejigbo.
A neighbor in their compound narrated what happened, He said;"We were all outside waiting to vote when Onyiyechi
rushed out, shouting for help. Out of curiosity, we all ran inside, only to discover blood all over the ground, on entering their apartment. On closer observation, we noticed that the blood was from her
husband chest region. We met him on the ground.
Before we could rush him to the hospital, he gave up the ghost. Perhaps, he would have survived the attack had Onyiyechi called for help early. From all indication, it was clear that she attempted to manage the situation immediately the incident occurred.
It was when she discovered that the
situation had overwhelmed her that she raised alarm. I do not know the name of her husband. We only know that of his wife, who we fondly call Onyiyechi. The irony of this matter is that she is not cantankerous.
She has never beaten a little child, let
alone to fight with any neighbor. Again on that day,we saw both of them together. They were seen sitting outside, one hour before the incident occurred.
Policemen from Ejigbo later came to
remove the corpse to the Isolo morgue” the
anonymous neighbor said. The police arrested the suspect while further investigation into the matter is ongoing as some other version of the story claims the couple got into a fight following a disagreement they had after Onyiyechi decided to grate Okro she was to use in preparing their meal inside their one room apartment. Her husband is reported to have
instructed her to take it out but she refused which sparked a quarrel and then a fight between them.

Ibadan businessman, Olanihun, dies at 69
Ibadan, Oyo State businessman and philanthropist, Mufutau Olanihun, died of protracted illness on Sunday at the age of 69.
The circumstances leading to Olanihun’s death are still not clear but a family source who did not give her name because she was not authorised to speak on the family’s behalf confirmed his death, saying that he had been buried according to Islamic rites.
“Our father and brother is dead. He died at the age of 69 and was buried on Sunday. An appropriate family spokesperson will speak on his death at an appropriate time. We urge the public to pray for his soul and that of the loved ones he left behind,” she said.
The popular businessman broke into economic reckoning in the late 80s and early 90s when he became a pioneer importer of second-hand electronic gadgets from all over the world in Ibadan. He made a huge fortune from the business, establishing companies and he was revered for his philanthropic work, support for Islamic religion and education. He built several mosques, schools and shopping malls where his products were sold.
Olanihun was also a socialite until he withdrew from high profile public functions after the June 12, 1993 presidential election when he was accused by some prominent Yoruba elders of not supporting the late presidential quest of Chief MKO Abiola. He denied the allegation publicly and insisted that Abiola was his benefactor. He also said on paid radio and television advertorial that he was not a politician.
Among the early mourners is Alhaji Isiaq Kunle Sanni, Chairman of Muslim Community in Oyo State who described the deceased as a great philanthropist, leader and benevolent individual who would be missed by the Ummah.
“His contribution to industry and education in Nigeria will be remembered for ages. In his private capacity, he gave thousands of scholarships to the less privileged children and offered Zakah to others in need,” he said.
Olanihun is survived by wives, children and grandchildren.
