Nigerian nurse charged with murder in scalding death of 23month-old in New York
According to a report by Mail Online, 54 year old nurse practitioner Oluyemisi Adebayo (pictured left) has been arrested and charged in the killing of a disabled toddler who was submerged in scalding bath water for about 30 second. Adebayo was arrested on Wednesday April 28th in Queens, New York just as she was about to board a flight to Nigeria, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
Authorities say Adebayo was taking care of 23-month-old Naomi Mondesire on April 21 when she prepared her for a bath.
Doctors told police Adebayo's account of how the baby was burned was inconsistent with the nature of her injuries, according to a criminal complaint.
Police say Naomi was submerged up to her waist in 130-degree water for 30 seconds. The little girl died from thermal injuries to 50 per cent of her body Monday, three days after doctors at Nassau University Medical Center performed surgery on her.
Naomi's grandmother was heartbroken and furious at the woman she had hired to look after the little girl just one day before she was scalded.
Gardite Mondesire, 54, said she returned to her apartment on Memphis Avenue in the Rosedale section of Queens at around 7.25pm Tuesday to find her tenant running around the home picking up pieces of her granddaughter's skin.
When she got Adebayo on the phone, the nurse allegedly claimed she didn't know how Naomi got scalded.
'She said "It’s bad. I did something bad. The baby got burned,”' Mondesire told the New York Daily News. 'But she said she didn’t know how.'
Corey Brock, Naomi's father, challenged Adebayo's claims that she had tested the water before placing his daughter in the tub.
Naomi's mother, 32-year-old Cynthia Mondesire
She claimed it was a mistake. She claimed she checked the water. It’s impossible,’ Brock told CBS News. ‘If she had checked the water, she would have been burnt also.’
Brock also pointed out that had the nurse been innocent, she would not have tried to flee the country Wednesday night.
The 54-year-old was detained at John F. Kennedy International Airport at around 7am while trying to board a flight to Nigeria via London.
Adebayo, who according to her LinkedIn page has been a licensed nurse practitioner for more than 16 years, could face up to 25 years to life in convicted.
‘The defendant had been trained to heal and save lives – which she is accused of failing to fulfill,’ DA Brown said in a press release. ‘The tiny victim suffered extraordinarily painful injuries for several days before she died. This is a terribly sad and tragic case that could have been prevented.’
Naomi's mother, 32-year-old Cynthia Mondesire, said she had had two miscarriages before giving birth to Naomi - her only surviving child.
‘With everything that she’s gone through, she was a fighter,’ Ms Mondesire told the News. ‘She was just starting to thrive.’
Before Naomi passed away Monday, her grandmother said she told the dying girl she was sorry and the child squeezed her finger in response. She will be laid to rest Saturday. Culled from UK Daily Mail

I will remain in PDP - Femi Fani-Kayode
Chief Femi Fani-Kayode says he will remain in the PDP despite the party's loss at the just concluded presidential election. Fani-Kayode, who served as the spokesperson for the PDP Presidential campaign organization said he won't run away from Nigeria & that he and some other party members will stay to form a viable opposition party. He said this at the handover of the presidential campaign report in Abuja today April 30th.
"I have been in the PDP since 2003. I went to APC for 9 months. I have enunciated the reasons for that. I feel I was absolutely right to do that at that point in time. I retraced my steps when it was very clear to me that what was on the other side was far worse than what was on our side. We made our point. The necessary concession was made. There was far more South western participation. It was a much more fairer fight against Boko Haram and that is why we came back and I came back and I played a leading role in this campaign. We are not going anywhere. I can speak for myself and I can speak for may others. We are here to stay. We will provide a viral opposition to the APC . We will do all that needs to be done to ensure the incoming government remains on its toes and we will all do this in a peaceful and honorable way. Nobody is going anywhere as far as I am concerned. We are here to stay and neither are we running away. There is nothing to be scared of" he said.

I’m under pressure to step down for Ngige – Ekwunife
The Senator-elect for Anambra Central Senatorial District, Uche Ekwunife, on Thursday explained how she has come under intense pressure from Igbo elders to renounce her mandate for Senator Chris Ngige, who is also from the district.
Ekwunife won the Senatorial seat in the March 28, 2015 National Assembly election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
She defeated Victor Umeh of the All Progressives Grand Alliance and Ngige of the All Progressives Congress.
Ekwunife, who is a member of the House of Representatives, told journalists in Abuja that she had since been under pressure to renounce the mandate for Ngige.
She said their excuse was for the purpose of a Senator from the South-East to emerge as Senate President in the coming 8th Senate.
Ekwunife vowed never to succumb to the elders pressure.
She said, “Yes, there has been immense pressure from various quarters in the Anambra Central Senatorial zone and by extension, Anambra State, on me to renounce the popular mandate given to me by the people of the senatorial district for somebody (Ngige) I defeated flatly for reasons of power sharing they are not even sure of.
“Even if they are sure of whatever position they want the person they are pressurising me to step down for, I will never take that from them because the mandate, as far as I am concerned, is far, far bigger than being sacrificed on the altar of power sharing.”

I WILL HANDOVER A NIGERIA COMPLETELY FREE OF TERRORIST STRONGHOLDS, PRESIDENT JONATHAN ASSURES
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan pledged Thursday in Abuja that he will do all within his powers to ensure that all Nigerian territory still held by terrorists and insurgents are totally liberated before May 29, 2015.
Receiving a delegation of Heads of Customs from the West and Central African Region of the World Customs Organisation led by the Secretary-General of the organisation, Mr. Kunio Mikuriya, President Jonathan said that he was determined to hand over a country completely free of terrorist strongholds to the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari.
The President said that ongoing military operations in the North-East had already recorded huge successes, with two states completely free from the control of terrorists, while operations in the third state had reached a concluding stage.
“We can now say two states are completely free from terrorist control, while in the third state, it is only in one Local Government Area that they are still present. That is in the Sambisa Forest,” he said.
President Jonathan noted that the military had already moved into the forest to seize the remaining camps of the terrorists, adding that the recent rescue of about 300 abducted girls and women was further evidence of the success being achieved in the ongoing operation.
On his decision to concede victory to the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, before all the results of the presidential elections were announced, President Jonathan said that elections must be approached from a nationalistic point of view.
“Our elections should be about where Nigeria is going. If Nigeria is moving forward, it is for the good of all Nigerians. My children and grandchildren will live and grow in this country and contribute to it.
“I always tell my colleagues to leave office when their time is up. We are trying to encourage African leaders not to remain in power as kings until death,’’ he said.
Mr. Mikuriya commended the President for supporting the reform of the Nigeria Customs Service, noting that other African countries had already started emulating the vision, strategy, adoption to new technology and result- oriented training of officers that were captured in Nigeria’s reforms.

Saudi man beheaded for killing father
A Saudi national convicted of murdering his father was beheaded on Thursday, bringing to 70 the number of executions carried out this year in the kingdom, the interior ministry said.
The number compares with 87 in the whole of 2014, according to an AFP tally.
Abdullah al-Balawi was convicted of stabbing his father to death, said a ministry statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency. He was executed in the northwestern city of Tabuk.
SPA said the son had planned the murder but it did give his motives.
Amnesty International has criticised a “macabre spike” in the use of the death penalty this year in Saudi Arabia, which the London-based watchdog ranked among the top three executioners in the world in 2014.
Drug trafficking, rape, murder, apostasy and armed robbery are all punishable by death under the kingdom’s strict version of Islamic sharia law.

While receiving sympathisers at the Ramat House, Bauchi, the Governor stated that the death of his mother did not come as a surprise as every soul must die.

Money laundering: Court jails Igbinedion for six years
A Federal High Court in Benin on Thursday sentenced Patrick Eboigbodin, an aide to a former Governor of Edo State, Lucky Igbinedion, to 20 years imprisonment without an option of fine for money laundering.
The presiding judge, Justice A. M. Liman, also sentenced a younger brother to the state ex-Governor, Michael Igbinedion, to six years imprisonment, with an option of fine of N1m for each of the three counts 79, 80 and 81, for which he was convicted.
Igbinedion, Eboigbodin and four companies were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on an 81 counts bothering on money laundering.
The four companies are Gava Corporation Limited, Romrig Nigeria Limited, PML Securities Company Limited and PML Nigeria Limited, addressed as the third to sixth accused persons.
The offences were said to have been committed during the administration of the former governor.
Eboigbodin was sentenced to two years each on 10 counts, while the court orderd the closure and forfeiture of assets of the sixth accused, (PML Limited) to the Federal Government.
It also mandated the company to pay the sum of N250, 000.
Justice Liman noted that the prosecution proved the alleged collaboration beyond reasonable doubts but discharged all the accused persons on other counts on the ground that the prosecution failed to prove the allegations.
The judge further explained that the prosecution only proved suspicion but failed to prove illicit origin of funds deposited in the said banks.
Earlier, counsel for the first, third to sixth accused persons, Richard Ahonanuogho, acknowledged that the 10 counts brought against his clients centred on money laundering as contained in Section 14 (1) of the Money Laundering Act (2004) and the law provided a sentence of two to three years imprisonment.
He, however, urged the court to use its discretion to award a fine or apply a suspended sentence as the first accused was a first offender, was still in his late 50’s and had not benefited from the said offence.
Counsel for the second accused, Abubakar Shamsudeen, had told the court that his client had pleaded leniency based on his age, being a first offender and victim of the system, based on the office he occupied when the offence was committed.
He, therefore, urged the court to apply an option of fine, not below N250, 000 or N500, 000 and not more than N1m in lieu of imprisonment.
But the counsel for the EFCC, Tayo Olukotun, urged the court not to be persuaded by the plea for leniency by the accused, arguing that their conviction was in line with the provision of the law and that the call for suspended sentence was not within the court’s jurisdiction.
The prosecution also submitted that the claim of non-criminal benefit by the first accused was not an issue because the crime had already been established.
He subsequently canvassed both option of fine and imprisonment.

Marketers collected N500bn oil subsidy in five months – FG
The Federal Government on Thursday said it had so far paid oil marketers N500bn within the last five months as fuel subsidy.
The Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said this in a statement by her Special Adviser on Communications, Mr Paul Nwabuikwu.
Giving a breakdown of the amount paid so far as fuel subsidy, Okonjo-Iweala said the government had, in December 2014, paid N350bn to oil marketers, noting that additional N31bn in foreign exchange differentials had already been released.
It said the Federal Government’s commitment to prioritise payment to marketers in spite of revenue constraints, has now made the ministry to release N156bn to the marketers.
The statement read, “In line with the Federal Government’s commitment to prioritise payment to marketers in spite of revenue constraints, the Federal Ministry of Finance has paid the sum of N156bn to oil marketers.
“The payment has two components. The first consists of the cash backing of the N100bn IOU which the marketers were given in March. The second is N56bn in interest payments for the marketers according to the PPPRA template.
“This leaves a balance of N98bn certified by PPPRA as the amount owed the markers.
“The N156bn is the latest in a series of significant payments made to the oil marketers within the last five months.
“These include over N300bn in two installments in December last year and N31bn in interest differentials recently.
“In all, oil marketers have received over N500bn within the past five months.”

Bullion van crushes motorcyclist in Ogun
Tragedy struck on Thursday in the Oke Ilewo area of Abeokuta when a bullion van, belonging to one of the new generation banks, crushed a 22-year-old man, Gbenga Okesola, to death.
The van, according to an eyewitness, hit the victim, who was riding a motorcycle around the OPIC Roundabout and dragged the motorcyclist for a few metres before the vehicle stopped.
The spy policemen escorting the van were said to have dragged the victim, who was still breathing from under the van and dropped him by the roadside, and the vehicle zoomed off.
This was said to have angered other commercial motorcyclists popular known as okada riders, who had their park at the Roundabout, and they resorted to violent protest, attacking law enforcement agents and passers-by.
A detachment of regular and riot policemen was later deployed in the scene, which led to a face-off between them and the protesters, who hauled stones, bottles and other missiles at them.
The policemen had to fire teargas canisters to disperse them. Doors of eateries, commercial banks and shops in the area were hurriedly shut, as residents, who were caught in the pandemonium, ran for dear lives.
The victim, who was a carpentry apprentice, was said to be on his way to the computer village in the area to buy a memory card, when the sad incident occurred.
An eyewitness, Modinat Salman, said the victim could have been alive, if he had been rushed to a nearby hospital.
She said, “I saw everything when it happened. The bullion van hit the man and it ran over him, dragging him on the road for some distance.
“But the police escort, following the van, merely pulled him out from under the vehicle and dumped him near the walkway, and left. They could have rushed him to the hospital, because he was still breathing. But suddenly more policemen came and started firing tear gas canisters at everybody.”
The crisis lasted for over three hours before normalcy was restored.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident.
He said the bullion van belonged to one of the new generation banks in the state and was driven a supernumerary policeman, popularly known as spy, trained by the bank to move cash from one point to the other.

Executed Andrew Chan writes haunting letter to children around the world, warning them about the dangers of drugs
'Now the reason why I'm writing you this letter is to address you guys about the dangers of drugs and the effects it can have on you and also others. To tell you a little bit about my life story, I was once 15, 16 and it wasn't too long ago I was sitting in a class just like you guys.
'I was an average kid and let me tell you that my teachers didn't like me one bit and I was no teacher's pet. But to cut a long story short, I got mixed up with drugs at a pretty young age and by the time I was 15 I was merged into the scene.'
'Ive done things which I am not proud of in my life and I've made some pretty stupid decisions. My life is a perfect example of an absolute waste.
'Now to elaborate the effects of where I am, I've missed weddings, I've missed funerals and the simple presence of my own family.
'The hurt and pain - I don't just put it onto myself, but the pain I put on my family is agonising. A simple touch such as a hug is not possible for a condemned man like me. I have nothing but an iron bar to hug rather than to be embraced by those I love and who I miss.'
'What you choose today will make what you become tomorrow. If you want to be a thug and a big bad wolf, I'll see you soon inside. But for those that want to do something in life I'd like you guys to see how important it is to put your head down and study hard.
'I hope these words will penetrate in your minds and in your hearts and I hope that most of you, if not all of you, will achieve more than I ever did.'
