Obas don’t campaign for politicians, Awujale tells Jonathan

The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, has told President Goodluck Jonathan, that it is not proper in Ijebuland or Yorubaland for an Oba to canvass for votes for any candidates seeking elective posts.

Rather, monarchs in Yorubaland only encourage their subjects to make their informed choices.

The monarch said this when President Goodluck Jonathan paid a private visit to him in his palace in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

President Jonathan, who arrived the palace around 11.15am in a convoy, was accompanied by the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Adamu Mu’azu; a former governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; Governors of Bayelsa and Ondo states, Seriake Dickson and Olusegun Mimiko respectively, among others.

The royal father said any Oba canvassing for votes for any political party’s candidate would be courting trouble. He said rather than engaging monarchs for campaign, each candidate must go out and sell his or manifesto to the electorate.

He said, “In Ijebu here, it is not possible for any Oba, not even only in Ijebu, in Yorubaland, to go out and say vote for this, vote for that; that person is looking for trouble.

“But give them the opportunity to present their programmes so that people can make up their minds on what to do. I think this is a very sound democratic principle and that is what I have decided to do, to give you the opportunity of meeting with the people.”

Oba Adetona noted that it was when the candidate would have presented the manifesto that the voters would decide whether or not to vote for him or her.

He said, “One, they see you as a person. Whether to engage with you or not to listen to you and see if there are areas where we can meet is a question for individual reason. As a result, everybody congregating belong to different groups. They are members of the PDP, the All Progressives Congress, All Progressives Grand Alliance. They belong to various interests, and when they come, they get to the gate, they shed their togas.

“The PDP will remove their PDP, the APC will remove their own. They will remove their own. They are going to the palace to meet their ruler, their paramount ruler; to receive that important august visitor who is coming to their land and give him all honour that is entitled to him.”

He, however, advised the electorates to vote for those that had the fear of God and integrity and not those who would mortgage their future, after offering them gifts.

He said, “Each time I have cause to talk to our people, I have always told them, in the churches and mosques that when you’re going to vote, make sure you back your sons and daughters who will give something back to you; not the ‘Ojelus’ (looters).

“Those who will be honest with you, who know the way of God; those are the people you should vote for; not those who will give you two, three spoons and mortgage your future. It is not right.”

The monarch, who prayed to God to guide the country right, acknowledged that he had never seen any election that was full of tension in the last 55 years like the current one coming up in less than two weeks.

President Jonathan had earlier in his speech highlighted his achievements to the monarch, which he said, cut across party, ethnic and religious lines in the last four years.

He said, “In the road infrastructure, we have tried. Railway is back, we are trying to improve our terminal buildings and security environment in our airports.

“The Health sector, we have tried both in the tertiary level, or what we call health tourism. Some of our hospitals are now open for kidney transplant and at the primary level we are able to eradicate guinea worm and we are on the way of eradicating polio completely from this country.”

President Jonathan explained that his administration’s focal activities when re-elected would be the implementation of the report of the National Confab as well as facilitate the construction of four deep sea port projects which include the Olokola in Ijebuland, that of Badagry, Akwa Ibom and the Age in Bayelsa State.

Speaking earlier on behalf of Ijebu Traditional Council, the Dagburewe of Idowa, Oba Yinusa Adekoya, had drawn the attention of the President to the non-appointment of indigenes of Ijebuland to any prominent position at the federal level.

President Jonathan who promised to correct this if re-elected, described Ijebuland “as a great land and there’s no government that will neglect the people of Ijebuland, I have to take that very very seriously.”

Vegetables that are healthy

It’s no stretch to say that the past few years have been all about kale. This once humble vegetable, more used as a plate garnish than anything else, has turned into the ultimate mainstream health food. But other veggies are just as, if not more, nutritious than kale. Read on for some of the vegetables that are healthier than kale.

Watercress (gbure): Of all the vegetables out there, watercress, which Yoruba call gbure, is the most nutrient-packed per serving. These greens are high in nitrate, which improves oxygen performance during exercise and lowers blood pressure. Watercress contains a ton of vitamins K, C and A, as well as beta carotenes. It’s also the best food source of PEITC, a naturally-occurring compound that has been shown to suppress the development of breast cancer. Calorie for calorie, you can’t get any better than watercress.

Collard greens: This southern food staple contains more calcium and double the amount of protein and iron, in comparison to kale. Collard greens also beat kale in terms of cholesterol-lowering and beat kale seven-fold when it comes to folate content.

Greens: Beet greens are absolutely loaded with fibre – one serving contains nearly one-fifth of the average daily recommended intake of fibre. These greens, often relegated to the compost bucket, are also a much better source of potassium, copper, vitamin E and calcium than kale.

Cabbage: Chinese cabbage contains essential amino acids that kale lacks. It is also rich in phytochemicals and organic sulphur compounds and antioxidants – the latter of which stay intact when Chinese cabbage is cooked, unlike kale.

Spinach: Ah, spinach – the original healthy leafy green. Don’t underestimate the power of this super food! In comparison to kale, spinach wins out in terms of antioxidants, fibre, iron, magnesium, potassium, vitamin A, protein and vitamin E.

OMG! Killer squad after us, says APC

The All Progressives Congress says some of its members and supporters have been marked for assassination ahead of the March 28 presidential election.

The APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said in a statement on Wednesday that already the younger brother of Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, was attacked in his campus room and hacked with a machete.

The party said the killing of nine APC members in two separate incidents in Rivers on Saturday night raises a very serious concern about the motive of the killings.

It said the fact that all those killed, including five at the D-Line of Port Harcourt and four along the Eastern By-Pass in the Marine Base near the state capital, were members of the APC, is a clear indication that the killings may have been politically-motivated.

The statement added, “Also worrisome, is the freaky attack on Chidi Adi Amaechi, the younger brother of Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who is a student of Igbinedion University in Benin, by machete-wielding young men who stormed his room in the early hours of Wednesday (March 11th, 2015) and inflicted injuries on his head and arms. Chidi is currently being treated at an undisclosed hospital.

“It is difficult to see these attacks as a mere happenstance against the backdrop of the ceaseless attacks on APC members and supporters in the Okrika council area of the state, where the opposition has been the victim of at least three bomb attacks, and the hate messages being purveyed by Dame Patience Jonathan, who hails from Okrika.

“We know that because they have no answer to the runaway popularity of our party in the state, they are ready to do anything possible to prevent free, fair and peaceful elections there on March 28 and April 11.

“By targeting opposition members and supporters, as well as their families, the anarchists will be hoping to trigger chaos and truncate the elections in the state. This is their plan, hence we are calling on the security agencies to act fast to fish out the killers in Rivers before they decimate the ranks of the opposition and scuttle the elections.”

The APC said the killings gave credence to allegations by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2013 that the President Goodluck Jonathan administration had trained snipers secretly.

The party said it was possible that the trained snipers were being used to kill APC members.

Clark’s wife escapes death as thugs attack campaign train

The Ogun Central senatorial candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Bisola Sodipo-Clark, narrowly escaped death on Tuesday evening when suspected thugs attacked her campaign train in Abeokuta.

This came barely 72 hours after her husband, the Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, paid a visit to the PDP leaders in the state and inaugurated the President Goodluck Jonathan Political Centre in Ijebu Igbo.

She was said to be attending a meeting of Wards 10, 11 and 12 of the party in Totoro area of the town on the fateful evening when the thugs invaded the venue and launched an attack.

The candidate was said to have just left the venue about two minutes earlier when the thugs stormed the place and violently disrupted the venue, which saw many supporters running helter-skelter.

Some of her supporters sustained injuries as chairs and tables were destroyed in the attack.

Speaking with journalists, the senatorial candidate said she has reported the incident to the police and the directorate of state security services.

She, however, blamed the attack on the ruling party in the state which she claimed was using the thugs to intimidate her.

She said, “The attack will not cage me in any form.”

The Director General of her campaign team, Segun Sowunmi, also accused the supporters of the ruling party as being responsible for the attack.

Court orders AIT to stop documentary on Osinbajo

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday barred further broadcast of defamatory documentaries on the vice presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, by the African Independent Television.

Justice James Tsoho, who made the order of interim injunction, also ordered the Nigerian Television Authority and any other broadcast station under the control of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, to stop airing similar videos forthwith.

The judge made the order in positive answer to the ex parte application brought before him by Osinbajo through his lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), to the effect.

The professor of Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria had complained to the court that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, having adjudged him a threat, sponsored the documentaries to cause him disaffection in the eye of the public.

AIT and NTA had, for weeks running, aired a documentary detailing the “atrocious” past of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). AIT also had a similar documentary on a national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, chronicling his series of alleged financial misconduct.

Osinbajo maintained that the said documentaries, which allegedly contained untrue information and injurious falsehoods, constitute a personal attack on his person.

He argued that the videos were being aired in violation of his fundamental human right to dignity of human person, right to privacy and family virtue and right to life and/or livelihood, as protected by sections 33, 34 and 37 of the 1999 Constitution.

He had therefore prayed Tsoho for an order of interim injunction, restraining AIT, NTA and any other broadcast stations under the control of Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria from further disseminating or broadcasting the damaging videos.

He said, “Unless the respondents are restrained in the manner requested in this application, damages will be grossly inadequate to compensate or redress the unquantifiable, unwarranted and malicious damage to the applicant’s right to dignity of human person, right to livelihood and privacy guaranteed and protected under sections 33, 34 and 37 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

After listening to submission by Falana, Tsoho ordered that NTA, AIT and any other broadcast station under the control of BON should forthwith stop the broadcast of the damaging documentaries which the applicant complained of until the determination of the substantive suit.

EFCC to arraign Kwara commissioner for N371m scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has said it will arraign a former Senior Special Adviser on Millennium Development Goals to former Governor Bukola Saraki of Kwara State, Olatunji Moronfoye, at the Federal High Court, Ilorin, on March 19, 2015.
Moronfoye is the current Commissioner for Information in Kwarra State.
The Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said in a statement on Wednesday that the anti-graft agency would also arraign the Senior Special Adviser on Millennium Development Goals to Governor AbdulFathah Ahmed, a cousin to Saraki, alongside the commissioner.
The commission is alleging that Moronfoye exploited the opportunities of his position as the SSA to the Governor on Millennium Development Goals to enrich himself.
The commissioner is also being accused of “abuse of office, awarding contracts to his cronies, embezzlement, diversion of public funds, and money laundering.”
Uwujaren alleged that the commissioner for information awarded contracts to the tune of N200m for the renovation of Ijagbo Health Centre, and to procure medical equipment for the health facility, to a company said to be owned by him.
He further alleged that the commissioner was the sole signatory to the account of the firm.
Uwujaren stated that Saraki on his part was being accused of abuse of office and for alleged diversion of state funds through inflated contracts.
He said the defendant procured 13 Toyota Hiace buses and converted them to ambulances in execution of a contract of N17.9m awarded to Chemiroy Nigeria Limited.
The Kwara State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Kamaldeen Ajibade, in a telephone interview with our correspondent  on Wednesday, said  as the state prosecuting counsel, he had not been notified or contacted by the EFFC.
The Senior Special Assistant to Ahmed on Media and Communication, Dr. Muyideen Akorede, said  the state government would await for the two accused to be arraigned and know their proper charges before making a comment.

his penis was so big that their first attempt at sex as a couple left her traumatized.
"When he came, we had sex but the experience was a nightmare. Instead of enjoying the sex, it turned out to be something else, because his penis was too big.
'she said After their first attempt, she took pain medication given to her by her mother who advised her to endure. However, when she and her hubby had sex again, it was 'too much to bear' and the couple concluded that no drug could help their sex life or their marriage. Her new husband decided
that he was willing to set her free, allowing her dissolve their union but only if his dowry and money spent during his courtship with her was paid back.

University of London honours Afe Babalola

The University of London  has bestowed the Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) on legal luminary, educationist and philanthropist, Chief Afe Babalola,  during its 2015 graduation ceremony held at the Barbican Centre, London on Wednesday.

Babalola, is the first African to be so honored by the university with a doctorate degree in Law after Nelson Mandela (Doctor of Science, Economics) in 1996 and Archbishop Desmond Tutu (Doctor of Divinity) 2008.

Eminent Nigerians have hailed the award.Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) has described the award as recognition of Babalola’s “contributions and undiminished input to humanity, particularly the legal profession in Nigeria.”

Olanipekun said the honor is “a departure from the depressing and discomforting news oozing out of Nigeria in very recent times; the proverbial sweetness that emerges at the dusk of the bitter leaf.”

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, described the award as the recognition of Babalola’s “outstanding achievements and meritorious service to humanity.”

Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, in his reaction, said that the university was persuaded by “those sterling qualities – those strides on the sands of time and those impactful contributions to legal education and the world of knowledge” recorded by the Octogenarian.

The Vice Chancellor, University of London, Sir Adrian Smith, responding to a mail said, “We are indeed delighted that Chief Afe Babalola will be accepting the honorary degree from the University of London because he has an exceptional record in both his personal achievements and in the difference he has made to others, particularly in the legal profession in Nigeria.”

Senate confirms Obanikoro as Minister

The Senate has defended its action of confirming Sen.Musiliu Obanikoro as Minister today despite protest by APC
Senators over alleged election rigging. Speaking with the press after Obanikoro's confirmation, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Enyinnaya Abaribe said all the reasons for not wanting to get him confirmed by APC Senators were still allegations and until it
is proven otherwise by a competent law court, Obanikoro stands innocent..
"There are allegations against Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, but in our law and the constitution of Nigeria, anything that is a mere allegation that is not a court decision is nothing but a mere allegation. The laws of Nigeria is very clear; you are innocent until proven guilty, so that is what played out on the floor of the Senate.
The Senators who addressed the press
conference and spoke otherwise of Senator Obanikoro are enjoying a privilege. This is because some of them have EFCC cases, and they are still in the senate because of this privilege of being innocent until proven guilty. So they cannot go to a press conference, and try to convict somebody when the person has not been convicted by a court of law.
The Senate is not a court of law and even when the Senate conducts its own investigation, it passes it to the appropriate body for prosecution" he said.

Check out New Porsche GT3 911 2016 Model That Cost a whooping sum of 57.5million naira

Premium brand manufacturer, Porsche, has unveiled 911 GT3 RS, a sophisticated sports car built to conquer the racetrack and achieve excellent driving on the road.

Auto experts say this has recorded a significant leap over the regular GT3 in weight reduction and overall performance.

The 911 GT3 RS just released at the Geneva International Motor Show as 2016 model car is described as a new track monster that will also serve an everyday driving.

“With the unveiling of the new 911 GT3 RS, Porsche is once again breaking down the boundaries of possibility, redefining what it means to create a car at the cutting edge of motorsport technology which is suitable for everyday driving,” the automaker said in a statement from the Porsche Lagos Centre.

The 911 GT3 coming with exceptional on-track capabilities in the new version is said to have once again cemented its status as the benchmark in its class.

Porsche has reportedly done extensive modifications to the car’s drive system, aerodynamics and lightweight design.“The new 911 GT3 boasts even greater, standard-setting performance,” it stated.

Engine

The 911 GT3 RS is powered by a four-litre six-cylinder engine with 500 hp (368 kW) of power and 460 Newton metres of torque, combined with a specially developed PDK transmission. The engine, which has the largest displacement and most power of any naturally aspirated engine with direct fuel injection in the 911 family, accelerates the car from zero to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and to 200 km/h in 10.9 seconds.

Performance

The new 911 GT3 RS, with a lap time of seven minutes and 20 seconds, is said to beat the historic record value of the Carrera GT super sports car on the North Loop of the Nürburgring by nine seconds.

Its combined NEDC fuel consumption is 12.7 l/100 km. And it is coming with functions such as declutching by ‘paddle neutral’ which is comparable to pressing the clutch with a conventional manual gearbox – and speed limiting by the Pit Speed button.

These features allow drivers more freedom of driving dynamics, while also providing them with more assistance when driving on a circuit racetrack.

Exterior

The car is said to have a masterpiece of intelligent lightweight design. For instance, it is noted that for the first time, the roof is made of magnesium; carbon fibre is used for the engine and luggage compartment lids, and other lightweight components are made of alternative materials. This makes the RS model around 10 kilogrammes lighter than the 911 GT3.

The lightweight roof lowers the sports car’s centre of gravity which improves its lateral dynamics. The body comes from the 911 Turbo, and it signifies its status as the closest road-legal race car with its RS-specific aerodynamic add-on parts. The front spoiler lip, which extends nearly to the road, and the large rear wing reinforce its dominant look.

A 30cm wide recess extends centrally over the CRFP bonnet and the magnesium roof. This feature is a stylish reference to the recess on the luggage compartment lid of the classic 911 models with air-cooled engines, and today it identifies the two largest lightweight components in the 911 GT3 RS.

Another characteristic is the unique front wheel arch air vents that extend into the upper section of the wings – just as in thoroughbred motorsport cars, they increase down-force at the front axle.

The chassis of the 911 GT3 RS has been tuned for maximum driving dynamics and precision.

Rear-axle steering and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus with fully variable rear axle differential lock increase agility and dynamics, and the wider front and rear track widths enable even better roll stability than in the 911 GT3.

In addition, the 911 GT3 RS comes with the widest tyres of any 911 model as standard. The results: even more agile turn-in characteristics and even higher cornering speeds.

Interior

The interior design of the 911 GT3 RS with Alcantara elements is based on the current 911 GT3. One key feature is the full bucket seats based on the carbon bucket seats of the 918 Spyder.

Other standard features are the Club Sport Package with a bolted-on roll cage behind the front seats, preparation for a battery master switch, and separately provided six-point safety harness for the driver and fire extinguisher with mounting bracket.

It also has as standard the Sport Chrono Package, which features – in addition to its integrated timers – the Porsche Track Precision app for a smartphone. The Track Precision app can be used to have lap times automatically measured via the GPS, and to log data on a smartphone for many driving parameters such as vehicle speed, lateral acceleration as well as acceleration and deceleration in the driving direction. It manages this data and lets the driver share and compare it with other drivers.

The price of the vehicle in Nigeria is given as N57,553,100.

OMG! Obasanjo explain how he escaped being Ritually-Killed with 7 Heads Of Cattle

Former president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo
recounted his near-death experiences over the years in his memoir ‘My Watch’. According to him, “The most bizarre of such
reports was the burial of 7 heads of cattle alive which would lead to my death within 7 days.

The man who told me the story participated in the process and he was the head of Daily Times Group at some time in the past and a columnist in another national daily.

“Before the expiration of the expected time of my death, he called me on the telephone to find out if I was ill. I told him I was not.
On the 7th day, he called again and was obviously surprised that I was alive and kicking. When much later he told me the story, I told him that greater service would have been done 7 heads of cattle had they been killed and distributed to the poor”.

He further disclosed that, “My experience over the years is that those who rely on fetish practice to protect themselves, seek favours and progress,or harm others are deceived by the fetish practitioners and believers and also deceive themselves.
I believe very much in prayer and the power of prayer but not fetish prater promoted in the name of Christian, Islamic or native African religion.”

Atiku vows to remain in APC

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar on Tuesday vowed to remain in the All Progressives Congress through thick and thin.

He reiterated his commitment to the party and the success of its presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari and other candidates in the 2015 general elections noting that his commitment is unwavering and never been up for bargaining.

Atiku said this while reacting to speculations that he was being courted by President Jonathan to return to the Peoples Democratic Party.

This was contained in a statement by his Media Campaign Office in Abuja.

He was quoted as saying “I remain irrevocably committed to the APC, as I promised in my concession speech at the conclusion of our party’s presidential primaries, and has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the victory of General Muhammadu Buhari and other candidates of our great party at the general elections.”

The statement said that reports of the Turaki Adamawa’s purported return to the PDP or any other party is the handiwork of mischief makers focused on pitching the former Vice President against other leaders of the opposition party.

Atiku Abubakar said that for the avoidance of doubt he is unequivocally committed to the unity of APC and that it will take more than the antics of mischief makers to break that bond.

Atiku noted that his return from Adamawa, where he convened a stakeholders’ meeting and reconciled disagreeing camps within the party, towards ensuring victory for the APC bears eloquent testimony of this commitment.

It also recalled that the former Vice President currently supports the financial operations of the APC in many states, in most cases as a sole financier.

“I have backed my words and commitment with my resources to ensure that I bring my influence and support to bear on our party’s march to victory at all levels in the general election. That should be enough to shut up mischief makers bent on derailing the APC’s success at the March 28 and April 11 elections,” he said.

Jonathan sacks Agwai, appoints Akau SURE-P chairman

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday sacked Gen. Martin Luther Agwai (rtd.) as the Chairman of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme.

He has named Mr. Ishaya Dare Akau as Agwai’s replacement.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President attributed Agwai’s sack to the continuation of his efforts to continuously reposition Federal Government’s agencies for optimal delivery.

The former Chief of Army Staff had, while delivering a lecture in commemoration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s 78th birthday on Thursday, said change in leadership was inevitable, declaring that the country’s leaders must accept it and move with it.

“In life, you find out that everything needs change, if that is what the community wants, what the people want, you must give it to them and as such, it becomes inevitable.

“You can have everything nice, but if you don’t have the right leadership to propel it, it cannot go anywhere. Integrity matters, doing what is good for the larger society, and not just what you want to do for a narrow society to please yourself,” Agwai had said in his lecture titled “Imperatives of a national security framework for the development and progress of Nigeria.”

Abati’s statement on Agwai’s sack read, “In furtherance of his efforts to continuously re-energise and reposition agencies of the Federal Government for optimal service delivery, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has appointed Mr. Ishaya Dare Akau as the new Chairman of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme.

“Mr. Akau, whose appointment takes immediate effect, replaces Gen. Martin Luther Agwai (rtd.), who served as Chairman of the SURE-P until today (Tuesday).

“The new SURE-P Chairman hails from Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State and holds Bachelors’ Degrees in Arts and Law.

“Mr. Akau comes to the job with years of experience as a high-level administrator in the nation’s public service. His record of service includes tenures as Chairman of the Kaduna State Universal Education Board and Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission.

“President Jonathan thanks the outgoing Chairman of SURE-P, Gen Agwai, for his service to the nation and wishes him well in his future endeavours.”

Jonathan had on February 2014 appointed Agwai to replace the pioneer SURE-P chairman, Chief Christopher Kolade, who resigned his appointment.

As the deputy chairman, he had acted as acting chairman before the President confirmed his appointment.
