INEC ready for next week's general elections - Jega

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Attahiru Jega says the electoral body is ready to conduct the general elections which starts next week Saturday March 28th. At a meeting with some Civil Society bodies in Abuja today, Prof Jega said the time
provided by the postponement has helped the commission articulate its plan for the conduct of a successful election "We believe very strongly that the period of the extension has been put to good use and it has added value and obviously we would be able to do a much better election and it also enforced our belief that the elections for 2015 will be remarkably better than the 2011 elections and in fact we believe it will
be the best election in Nigeria's history" he said
He however raised concerns over the security of INEC staffs and NYSC members who would be working during the
election days "Clearly security remains an issue of concern particularly securing the staff of INEC as they are being deployed or as they are conducting the elections and also protecting the election environment" he said

Atiku Abubakar Releases A Statement On His Political Stance

President Jonathan’s visit to VP Atiku Abubakar at his home about a week ago sparked rumours that he was decamping back to PDP.
Well, that is not happening. He just released this statement via his facebook handle.

They Are Busy Abusing Me And My Husband, I Will Not Answer Them – Patience Jonathan

First Lady Patience Jonathan says she’ll not join issues with the opposition party in Rivers state who she described as rascals.
Mrs Jonathan said they have been abusing her and her husband over the attack at APC rally in Okrika on Feb 17th and she doesn’t plan to answer them.
She said this while campaigning at the PDP
women rally in Rivers state today. She said;
“They are rascals and I will not respond to them.Don’t let me open my mouth to talk about these rascals.
The Rivers monorail will not be completed until hundred (years). It will remain like that until my great grandchildren are born. We did not vote for these people.
We in Rivers State voted Celestine Omehia, but these people came and took our mandate away and today they are abusing us.They don’t have respect for elders. They are busy abusing me and my husband. I will not answer them.
In Rivers State, we respect elders but these
rascals have no respect for their elders. We must vote them out in April.”

Obanikoro, seven others get ministerial portfolios

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday inaugurated the eight new ministers recently confirmed by the Senate before the commencement of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting.

The President thereafter assigned portfolios to them as follows: Senator Patricia Akwashiki (Information); Prof. Nicholas Ada (State, Foreign Affairs I); Senator Musiliu Obanikoro (State, Foreign Affairs II); Col. Augustine Akobundu (retd.) (State, Defence); Mr. Fidelis Nwankwo (State, Health); Mrs. Hauwa Bappa (State, Niger Delta Affairs); Mr. Kenneth Kobani (State, Industry, Trade and Investment); and Senator Joel Ikenya (Labour and Productivity).

The President also named the Minister of State, Health, Khaliru Alhassan, as the Minister of Health.

Alhassan has been acting as Supervising Minister of Health since Prof. Onyebuchi Ckukwu resigned in 2014.

Also inaugurated on Wednesday were a commissioner for the Federal Civil Service Commission, representing Plateau, Benue and Nassarawa States, Dr. Jonah Madugu; and a commissioner for National Population Commission, Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyi, from Lagos State.

Jonathan urged the new ministers to be ready to work hard to justify their appointment which is coming during his administration’s “injury time.”

He said since the eyes of all Nigerians would be on them, they must be ready to put up outstanding performances within the short time available.

Jonathan said, “For the ministers, this is an injury time. It is like bringing a player in when you have just five minutes to go in a football match.

“So everyone wants to know what that player will do, the magic the player will perform within that short period. The player himself will be struggling to at least kick the ball before the end of the game.

“So you are coming in at a quite challenging period and I believe that a number of people will not envy you because government is coming to a close. But sometimes, it is even good to come at this time because you are now well exposed to Nigerians.

“Everybody will be watching your dancing steps and ‎we believe you will dance well.”

While describing the civil service as the engine room of government, Jonathan admitted that the greatest problem of the sector is indiscipline.

He urged the new commissioners to join others to modernise the service.

He also described census as critical to national planning, urging Salu-Hudeyin to contribute her quota to the success of the NPC.

Auchi poly matriculates 12,000

The Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State, has held its 32nd matriculation ceremony for the 2014/2015 session, where it formally admitted a total of 12,000 students.

Speaking during the ceremony held on Friday, the Rector of the institution, Dr. Philipa Idogho, explained that the matriculants were among “thousands” who participated in the post-UTME screening.

Idogho said the institution had a responsibility to train the students in both character and learning, in line with vision of the school.

She stressed that the institution’s management had put in place measures to check improper dressing, cultism, examination malpractice and other social vices.

She, however, urged the students to remain focused and resist the temptation to be negatively influenced by people of questionable character.

The rector added, ‎”I urged you to take full advantage of this privilege of admission by working studiously to attain your goals and ambition in this institution. The management of the polytechnic frowns at membership of cult groups.
“On our part, we will do all we need to do to make you men and women of character. The polytechnic is determined to make the learning environment conducive for you, so that you can optimise your time of learning.”

The Registrar, Dr. Margaret Ashikpelokha, who administer the oath of matriculation, urged the students to subscribe to rules and regulation guiding the institution, as members of the academic community.

‎”This oath entails that you pay due respect to the rector and officers of the polytechnic and that you will be faithful and observe the rules and regulation guiding the polytechnic,” she said.

Oyinlola enrolls for Theology at Open University

Former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, was on Saturday matriculated as a post graduate student at the National Open University, Osogbo Campus.
Oyinlola, who retired from the military as a Brigadier General enrolled at the university for Post Graduate Diploma in Theology.
The Centre Director of NOUN, Osogbo campus, Dr. Yemisi Pitan, advised the former governor and other matriculating  students to focus on their studies and be good ambassadors of the institution.

Pitan asked the students to take their studies seriously, saying the centre would not tolerate laziness and any anti-social behaviour.
Oyinlola lamented inadequate funding of the education sector in the country and he advised the Federal Government to invest more in the sector for the development of the nation.
He said he decided to study Theology in order to know God more and added that he could become a preacher of the gospel.
Oyinlola said, ” The Federal Government should invest more in the education sector. It is a critical sector which must be given attention for any nation to develop.
“Nigeria will be greater if we invest more in the education sector and Nigerian universities will rank among the best in the world with the proper funding of the sector.”

Sharing bed with your spouse good for the heart –Study

In ancient Rome, the marital bed was only a place for sexual congress and not for sleeping, but now marital bed encompasses the sexual congress, sleeping, relaxing, cuddling and having pillow talks.

Sharing a bed with a partner is one issue that has not enjoyed a unanimous standpoint, largely because individuals’ preference differs. It is also one of such issues that have been a subject of discourse.

While some see it as a good thing that should not even be compromised, some others do not embrace the idea, hence, they would rather sleep in separate rooms, or separate beds.

Interestingly, those who agree and those who disagree have their reasons for belonging to either side of the divide. Findings have shown that those who despise the idea cite issues such as snoring, sweating, stealing the sheets and absence of privacy as excuses for not giving it a thought. On the other hand, those who embrace the idea argued that it enhances intimacy, closeness and happiness.

But beyond the aforementioned issues, a study, published in Daily Mail has shown that sharing a bed with a partner is good for the heart. This is beyond the fact that it encourages the feeling of safety and security, especially for the woman.

The researchers from the University of Pittsburgh, United States, found that sleeping on the same bed with someone you love has a protective effect by lowering the levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, and boosts the level of the love hormone, oxytocin, which has been found to induce bonding feelings and a healthy heart.

The cortisol hormone had been found to have a link with a protein that can trigger heart disease and depression. This implies that sleeping next to someone you love helps to reduce the likelihood of having such ailments.

“Prolonged periods of elevated cortisol have been linked with an increase in cytokines — proteins involved in inflammation that can trigger heart disease, depression and auto-immune disorders,” the study said.

One of the contributors to the study, Dr. David Hamilton, a scientist, said apart from sexual intercourse, sleeping together, in a happy relationship, is another way to increase the oxytocin levels.

He said, “Sleeping together will increase oxytocin levels, provided you are happy in the relationship. Making love is one of the most reliable ways to produce oxytocin, as is going to sleep, embracing someone or just being physically happy in their company or with the conversation you are having in bed.

“And oxytocin has a super-spiral effect; the more physical contact you have, the more oxytocin you’ll produce, which causes you to want more contact. Oxytocin can have an addictive effect.”

Meanwhile, the lead researcher, Dr. Wendy Troxel, a behavioural and social scientist at the RAND Corporation and an assistant professor of psychiatry and psychology, said sleep is critically important for health and wellbeing of everyone.

She added, “Sleep is a critically important health behaviour that we know is associated with heart disease and psychiatric wellbeing.

“We also know sleep happens to be a behaviour couples engage in together, so it stands to reason it may be an important link with their health.

“And there is extensive literature showing that happily married people live longer, happier, and healthier lives than their unmarried or unhappily married counterparts.”

Troxel explained that another advantage of sharing a bed with one’s partner is that it helps to diagnose or observe the other person’s health problems or sleeping disorder, such as sleep apnoea, which is a condition that interrupts and ceases breathing while asleep, forcing the person to wake up. Heavy snoring is a symptom of this.

She said, “What we do know about couples and sleep is that happily married women have fewer sleep problems than their unhappily married counterparts.

“Couples who are mismatched in terms of their preferences for sleep timing have poorer relationship functioning such as more conflict, less intimacy and less support. Such people will not reap so many benefits.”

The study pointed out that the benefits derivable from the oxytocin hormone go beyond sleeping next to each other. It added that what is important is the bonding between the couples, which could also be through pillow talk, cuddling and even hugging, as simple as it is.

In a bid to reveal the health benefits of hug, some researchers from the University of North Carolina, US, asked 59 women who were either married or had partners to keep a diary of the number of hugs they received over a particular period of time.

When analysing the diaries of the participants and the levels of oxytocin in their blood after the exercise, they found that the women who had received the highest number of hugs had the highest levels of oxytocin, the lowest blood pressure and heart rates.

“Oxytocin’s health benefits include expanding blood vessels, which increases blood flow and ultimately a more healthy heart and system,” it added.

Troxel explained further that women in long-term stable relationships fell asleep more quickly and woke up less frequently during the night than single women because the feelings of safety and security with a partner may lead to more restful sleep.

Also, a chartered psychologist, Dr. Jason Ellis, said women reap more benefits from bed sharing than men, adding that the benefits tend to be psychological rather than physiological.

“The women we studied reported more enjoyable and refreshing sleep when sharing a bed compared to the men, possibly because the women feel more secure and supported, unlike sleeping alone that has been shown to elevate levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

For couples who have different preference between soft and hard mattresses, a chartered physiotherapist at London Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Centre, Sammy Margo, said such couples should buy a mattress in two parts – one half firm and the other half soft. She noted that women’s preference for soft mattress could be due to the soft lumps and bumps they have.

“If your partner is a snorer, go to bed first so that if you are in deeper stages of sleep when your partner joins you, by that time, his or her snoring is less likely to interrupt your sleep,” Margo added.

Other experts advised that those who could not bear sleeping with their partners everyday could do so on weekends and that use of separate blanket, which can prevent sharing temperature, can also be adopted.

Commenting on the findings of the study, a consultant endocrinologist, Dr. Michael Olamoyegun, said even though he had not read the study, the possible explanation would be that being in a relaxed mood reduces the level of cortisol, the stress hormone and increases the level of oxytocin hormone.

He said, “If the study is true, it means if couples sleep together on the bed and there is harmony between them, they would be relaxed and probably won’t be under any stress and if any, it would be reduced because of the relaxed mood, which may in a way reduce the level of cortisol that is produced.

“If the cortisol level goes up as a result of stress, whether physical or psychological, it can cause cushing syndrome, which is when there is a high level of cortisol in the system, and it manifests by elevated blood pressure. Hence, it can cause obesity, diabetes and hypertension, which affect the heart.”

He explained that what the oxytocin hormone does is relaxation of muscles, adding that its main function is in the uterus, to aid child delivery. “It also has some effects on the blood vessel but not as significant as it has on the uterus. So in a way, what it does is to cause relaxation and the blood pressure is not likely to go up at that time, because once there is relaxation, it reduces arterial blood pressure,” he added.

Friends lock 10-year-old in cage before setting him alight in Yemen

A group of children in Yemen have attempted to burn a 10-year-old boy to death after first locking him in a cage in a shocking imitation of the Islamic State’s murder of a Jordanian pilot.

As many as seven boys are believed to have attacked the yet unnamed victim in Al Dahthath village in the country’s northern Ibb province, according to Daily Mail UK.

The helpless child was thrown in a wooden cage, had petrol poured over his body before being set alight. Thankfully a group of locals spotted the attack and managed to save the boy’s life, although he was still left with horrific burn injuries on his legs.

During the attack, the boys are said to have assumed different terrorist roles, with the ‘leader’ sitting in a chair and giving orders to his friends.

“The villagers took him to a local hospital where he received treatment for burns to one of his legs,” Mr. Mouzahem, a local said.

News of the attack is coming just weeks after video emerged showing a group of young Yemeni boys reenacting the brutal murder of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians by Islamic State militants in Libya. The grainy mobile phone footage was reportedly filmed somewhere on the Gulf coast in Yemen.

South Africa claims first successful penis transplant

South African doctors have confirmed that they performed the world’s first successful penis transplant, three months after conducting the ground-breaking operation.

The 21-year-old patient had his penis amputated three years ago after a botched circumcision at a traditional initiation ceremony.

In a nine-hour operation at the Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town on December 11 last year, he received his new penis from a deceased donor.

“We’ve proved that it can be done — we can give someone an organ that is just as good as the one that he had,” said Professor Frank Graewe, head of plastic reconstructive surgery at Stellenbosch University.

“It was a privilege to be part of this first successful penis transplant in the world.”

Doctors said the man, whose identity has not been disclosed, has made a full recovery since the operation and had regained all his urinary and reproductive functions.

In 2006, a Chinese man had a penis transplant but his doctors removed the organ after two weeks due to “a severe psychological problem of the recipient and his wife.”

Tanzania arrests witchdoctors over attacks on albinos

At least 200 people have been arrested in Tanzania as part of a nationwide crackdown on witchdoctors linked to a wave of albino attacks and murders, police have said.
Police said on Thursday that they had arrested 225 unlicensed traditional healers and soothsayers during a special operation carried out in several parts of the east African country and due to be extended to all 30 regions.
“Some of those arrested were found in possession of items like lizard skin, warthog teeth, ostrich eggs, monkey tails, bird claws, mule tails and lion skin,” police spokesperson Advera Bulimba said in a statement.
Bulimba said the police campaign would target the entire network of gangsters, traders and witchdoctors, adding that 97 of those detained had already appeared in court.
The statement also appealed to religious leaders, traditional elders, politicians and journalists “to continue the awareness campaign against superstitious beliefs that are holding back the development of our country.”
The announcement comes after President Jakaya Kikwete said the ongoing attacks against people with albinism, whose body parts are used for witchcraft, were “disgusting and a big embarrassment for the nation”.
Albinos are sometimes abducted and killed, fuelled by beliefs that their body parts will bring luck.

US air strike in Somalia kills Al-Shabaab chief

A senior Al-Shabaab intelligence commander is suspected to have been killed in a drone strike by the United States in south Somalia on Thursday evening, local authorities said.

Mohamed Ali, a local district commissioner in Garbaharey town, said the drone strike hit two vehicles carrying three senior Al- Shabaab commanders to Gedo region along the Somalia-Kenya border.

“The strike was targeting one of the senior intelligence commanders, Aden Garar and his team,” said Ali.

Residents in the area said they heard huge explosions. Witnesses said the two vehicles were completely destroyed.

The strike happened a few hours after Al-Shabaab launched an attack at a regional administration headquarters in central Somalia, killing 10 people and injuring scores of others.

The U.S. has carried out a number of air strikes targeting the militant group and killed some of its top leaders.

The Al-Qaeda linked group has not commented on the matter and neither the government in Mogadishu.

Obas don’t campaign for politicians, Awujale tells Jonathan

The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, has told President Goodluck Jonathan, that it is not proper in Ijebuland or Yorubaland for an Oba to canvass for votes for any candidates seeking elective posts.

Rather, monarchs in Yorubaland only encourage their subjects to make their informed choices.

The monarch said this when President Goodluck Jonathan paid a private visit to him in his palace in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

President Jonathan, who arrived the palace around 11.15am in a convoy, was accompanied by the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Adamu Mu’azu; a former governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; Governors of Bayelsa and Ondo states, Seriake Dickson and Olusegun Mimiko respectively, among others.

The royal father said any Oba canvassing for votes for any political party’s candidate would be courting trouble. He said rather than engaging monarchs for campaign, each candidate must go out and sell his or manifesto to the electorate.

He said, “In Ijebu here, it is not possible for any Oba, not even only in Ijebu, in Yorubaland, to go out and say vote for this, vote for that; that person is looking for trouble.

“But give them the opportunity to present their programmes so that people can make up their minds on what to do. I think this is a very sound democratic principle and that is what I have decided to do, to give you the opportunity of meeting with the people.”

Oba Adetona noted that it was when the candidate would have presented the manifesto that the voters would decide whether or not to vote for him or her.

He said, “One, they see you as a person. Whether to engage with you or not to listen to you and see if there are areas where we can meet is a question for individual reason. As a result, everybody congregating belong to different groups. They are members of the PDP, the All Progressives Congress, All Progressives Grand Alliance. They belong to various interests, and when they come, they get to the gate, they shed their togas.

“The PDP will remove their PDP, the APC will remove their own. They will remove their own. They are going to the palace to meet their ruler, their paramount ruler; to receive that important august visitor who is coming to their land and give him all honour that is entitled to him.”

He, however, advised the electorates to vote for those that had the fear of God and integrity and not those who would mortgage their future, after offering them gifts.

He said, “Each time I have cause to talk to our people, I have always told them, in the churches and mosques that when you’re going to vote, make sure you back your sons and daughters who will give something back to you; not the ‘Ojelus’ (looters).

“Those who will be honest with you, who know the way of God; those are the people you should vote for; not those who will give you two, three spoons and mortgage your future. It is not right.”

The monarch, who prayed to God to guide the country right, acknowledged that he had never seen any election that was full of tension in the last 55 years like the current one coming up in less than two weeks.

President Jonathan had earlier in his speech highlighted his achievements to the monarch, which he said, cut across party, ethnic and religious lines in the last four years.

He said, “In the road infrastructure, we have tried. Railway is back, we are trying to improve our terminal buildings and security environment in our airports.

“The Health sector, we have tried both in the tertiary level, or what we call health tourism. Some of our hospitals are now open for kidney transplant and at the primary level we are able to eradicate guinea worm and we are on the way of eradicating polio completely from this country.”

President Jonathan explained that his administration’s focal activities when re-elected would be the implementation of the report of the National Confab as well as facilitate the construction of four deep sea port projects which include the Olokola in Ijebuland, that of Badagry, Akwa Ibom and the Age in Bayelsa State.

Speaking earlier on behalf of Ijebu Traditional Council, the Dagburewe of Idowa, Oba Yinusa Adekoya, had drawn the attention of the President to the non-appointment of indigenes of Ijebuland to any prominent position at the federal level.

President Jonathan who promised to correct this if re-elected, described Ijebuland “as a great land and there’s no government that will neglect the people of Ijebuland, I have to take that very very seriously.”

Vegetables that are healthy

It’s no stretch to say that the past few years have been all about kale. This once humble vegetable, more used as a plate garnish than anything else, has turned into the ultimate mainstream health food. But other veggies are just as, if not more, nutritious than kale. Read on for some of the vegetables that are healthier than kale.

Watercress (gbure): Of all the vegetables out there, watercress, which Yoruba call gbure, is the most nutrient-packed per serving. These greens are high in nitrate, which improves oxygen performance during exercise and lowers blood pressure. Watercress contains a ton of vitamins K, C and A, as well as beta carotenes. It’s also the best food source of PEITC, a naturally-occurring compound that has been shown to suppress the development of breast cancer. Calorie for calorie, you can’t get any better than watercress.

Collard greens: This southern food staple contains more calcium and double the amount of protein and iron, in comparison to kale. Collard greens also beat kale in terms of cholesterol-lowering and beat kale seven-fold when it comes to folate content.

Greens: Beet greens are absolutely loaded with fibre – one serving contains nearly one-fifth of the average daily recommended intake of fibre. These greens, often relegated to the compost bucket, are also a much better source of potassium, copper, vitamin E and calcium than kale.

Cabbage: Chinese cabbage contains essential amino acids that kale lacks. It is also rich in phytochemicals and organic sulphur compounds and antioxidants – the latter of which stay intact when Chinese cabbage is cooked, unlike kale.

Spinach: Ah, spinach – the original healthy leafy green. Don’t underestimate the power of this super food! In comparison to kale, spinach wins out in terms of antioxidants, fibre, iron, magnesium, potassium, vitamin A, protein and vitamin E.

OMG! Killer squad after us, says APC

The All Progressives Congress says some of its members and supporters have been marked for assassination ahead of the March 28 presidential election.

The APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said in a statement on Wednesday that already the younger brother of Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, was attacked in his campus room and hacked with a machete.

The party said the killing of nine APC members in two separate incidents in Rivers on Saturday night raises a very serious concern about the motive of the killings.

It said the fact that all those killed, including five at the D-Line of Port Harcourt and four along the Eastern By-Pass in the Marine Base near the state capital, were members of the APC, is a clear indication that the killings may have been politically-motivated.

The statement added, “Also worrisome, is the freaky attack on Chidi Adi Amaechi, the younger brother of Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who is a student of Igbinedion University in Benin, by machete-wielding young men who stormed his room in the early hours of Wednesday (March 11th, 2015) and inflicted injuries on his head and arms. Chidi is currently being treated at an undisclosed hospital.

“It is difficult to see these attacks as a mere happenstance against the backdrop of the ceaseless attacks on APC members and supporters in the Okrika council area of the state, where the opposition has been the victim of at least three bomb attacks, and the hate messages being purveyed by Dame Patience Jonathan, who hails from Okrika.

“We know that because they have no answer to the runaway popularity of our party in the state, they are ready to do anything possible to prevent free, fair and peaceful elections there on March 28 and April 11.

“By targeting opposition members and supporters, as well as their families, the anarchists will be hoping to trigger chaos and truncate the elections in the state. This is their plan, hence we are calling on the security agencies to act fast to fish out the killers in Rivers before they decimate the ranks of the opposition and scuttle the elections.”

The APC said the killings gave credence to allegations by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2013 that the President Goodluck Jonathan administration had trained snipers secretly.

The party said it was possible that the trained snipers were being used to kill APC members.

Clark’s wife escapes death as thugs attack campaign train

The Ogun Central senatorial candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Bisola Sodipo-Clark, narrowly escaped death on Tuesday evening when suspected thugs attacked her campaign train in Abeokuta.

This came barely 72 hours after her husband, the Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, paid a visit to the PDP leaders in the state and inaugurated the President Goodluck Jonathan Political Centre in Ijebu Igbo.

She was said to be attending a meeting of Wards 10, 11 and 12 of the party in Totoro area of the town on the fateful evening when the thugs invaded the venue and launched an attack.

The candidate was said to have just left the venue about two minutes earlier when the thugs stormed the place and violently disrupted the venue, which saw many supporters running helter-skelter.

Some of her supporters sustained injuries as chairs and tables were destroyed in the attack.

Speaking with journalists, the senatorial candidate said she has reported the incident to the police and the directorate of state security services.

She, however, blamed the attack on the ruling party in the state which she claimed was using the thugs to intimidate her.

She said, “The attack will not cage me in any form.”

The Director General of her campaign team, Segun Sowunmi, also accused the supporters of the ruling party as being responsible for the attack.

Court orders AIT to stop documentary on Osinbajo

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday barred further broadcast of defamatory documentaries on the vice presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, by the African Independent Television.

Justice James Tsoho, who made the order of interim injunction, also ordered the Nigerian Television Authority and any other broadcast station under the control of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, to stop airing similar videos forthwith.

The judge made the order in positive answer to the ex parte application brought before him by Osinbajo through his lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), to the effect.

The professor of Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria had complained to the court that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, having adjudged him a threat, sponsored the documentaries to cause him disaffection in the eye of the public.

AIT and NTA had, for weeks running, aired a documentary detailing the “atrocious” past of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). AIT also had a similar documentary on a national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, chronicling his series of alleged financial misconduct.

Osinbajo maintained that the said documentaries, which allegedly contained untrue information and injurious falsehoods, constitute a personal attack on his person.

He argued that the videos were being aired in violation of his fundamental human right to dignity of human person, right to privacy and family virtue and right to life and/or livelihood, as protected by sections 33, 34 and 37 of the 1999 Constitution.

He had therefore prayed Tsoho for an order of interim injunction, restraining AIT, NTA and any other broadcast stations under the control of Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria from further disseminating or broadcasting the damaging videos.

He said, “Unless the respondents are restrained in the manner requested in this application, damages will be grossly inadequate to compensate or redress the unquantifiable, unwarranted and malicious damage to the applicant’s right to dignity of human person, right to livelihood and privacy guaranteed and protected under sections 33, 34 and 37 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

After listening to submission by Falana, Tsoho ordered that NTA, AIT and any other broadcast station under the control of BON should forthwith stop the broadcast of the damaging documentaries which the applicant complained of until the determination of the substantive suit.

EFCC to arraign Kwara commissioner for N371m scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has said it will arraign a former Senior Special Adviser on Millennium Development Goals to former Governor Bukola Saraki of Kwara State, Olatunji Moronfoye, at the Federal High Court, Ilorin, on March 19, 2015.
Moronfoye is the current Commissioner for Information in Kwarra State.
The Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said in a statement on Wednesday that the anti-graft agency would also arraign the Senior Special Adviser on Millennium Development Goals to Governor AbdulFathah Ahmed, a cousin to Saraki, alongside the commissioner.
The commission is alleging that Moronfoye exploited the opportunities of his position as the SSA to the Governor on Millennium Development Goals to enrich himself.
The commissioner is also being accused of “abuse of office, awarding contracts to his cronies, embezzlement, diversion of public funds, and money laundering.”
Uwujaren alleged that the commissioner for information awarded contracts to the tune of N200m for the renovation of Ijagbo Health Centre, and to procure medical equipment for the health facility, to a company said to be owned by him.
He further alleged that the commissioner was the sole signatory to the account of the firm.
Uwujaren stated that Saraki on his part was being accused of abuse of office and for alleged diversion of state funds through inflated contracts.
He said the defendant procured 13 Toyota Hiace buses and converted them to ambulances in execution of a contract of N17.9m awarded to Chemiroy Nigeria Limited.
The Kwara State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Kamaldeen Ajibade, in a telephone interview with our correspondent  on Wednesday, said  as the state prosecuting counsel, he had not been notified or contacted by the EFFC.
The Senior Special Assistant to Ahmed on Media and Communication, Dr. Muyideen Akorede, said  the state government would await for the two accused to be arraigned and know their proper charges before making a comment.

his penis was so big that their first attempt at sex as a couple left her traumatized.

'she said After their first attempt, she took pain medication given to her by her mother who advised her to endure. However, when she and her hubby had sex again, it was 'too much to bear' and the couple concluded that no drug could help their sex life or their marriage. Her new husband decided
that he was willing to set her free, allowing her dissolve their union but only if his dowry and money spent during his courtship with her was paid back.

University of London honours Afe Babalola

The University of London  has bestowed the Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) on legal luminary, educationist and philanthropist, Chief Afe Babalola,  during its 2015 graduation ceremony held at the Barbican Centre, London on Wednesday.

Babalola, is the first African to be so honored by the university with a doctorate degree in Law after Nelson Mandela (Doctor of Science, Economics) in 1996 and Archbishop Desmond Tutu (Doctor of Divinity) 2008.

Eminent Nigerians have hailed the award.Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) has described the award as recognition of Babalola’s “contributions and undiminished input to humanity, particularly the legal profession in Nigeria.”

Olanipekun said the honor is “a departure from the depressing and discomforting news oozing out of Nigeria in very recent times; the proverbial sweetness that emerges at the dusk of the bitter leaf.”

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, described the award as the recognition of Babalola’s “outstanding achievements and meritorious service to humanity.”

Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, in his reaction, said that the university was persuaded by “those sterling qualities – those strides on the sands of time and those impactful contributions to legal education and the world of knowledge” recorded by the Octogenarian.

The Vice Chancellor, University of London, Sir Adrian Smith, responding to a mail said, “We are indeed delighted that Chief Afe Babalola will be accepting the honorary degree from the University of London because he has an exceptional record in both his personal achievements and in the difference he has made to others, particularly in the legal profession in Nigeria.”

Senate confirms Obanikoro as Minister

The Senate has defended its action of confirming Sen.Musiliu Obanikoro as Minister today despite protest by APC
Senators over alleged election rigging. Speaking with the press after Obanikoro's confirmation, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Enyinnaya Abaribe said all the reasons for not wanting to get him confirmed by APC Senators were still allegations and until it
is proven otherwise by a competent law court, Obanikoro stands innocent..
"There are allegations against Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, but in our law and the constitution of Nigeria, anything that is a mere allegation that is not a court decision is nothing but a mere allegation. The laws of Nigeria is very clear; you are innocent until proven guilty, so that is what played out on the floor of the Senate.
The Senators who addressed the press
conference and spoke otherwise of Senator Obanikoro are enjoying a privilege. This is because some of them have EFCC cases, and they are still in the senate because of this privilege of being innocent until proven guilty. So they cannot go to a press conference, and try to convict somebody when the person has not been convicted by a court of law.
The Senate is not a court of law and even when the Senate conducts its own investigation, it passes it to the appropriate body for prosecution" he said.

Check out New Porsche GT3 911 2016 Model That Cost a whooping sum of 57.5million naira

Premium brand manufacturer, Porsche, has unveiled 911 GT3 RS, a sophisticated sports car built to conquer the racetrack and achieve excellent driving on the road.

Auto experts say this has recorded a significant leap over the regular GT3 in weight reduction and overall performance.

The 911 GT3 RS just released at the Geneva International Motor Show as 2016 model car is described as a new track monster that will also serve an everyday driving.

“With the unveiling of the new 911 GT3 RS, Porsche is once again breaking down the boundaries of possibility, redefining what it means to create a car at the cutting edge of motorsport technology which is suitable for everyday driving,” the automaker said in a statement from the Porsche Lagos Centre.

The 911 GT3 coming with exceptional on-track capabilities in the new version is said to have once again cemented its status as the benchmark in its class.

Porsche has reportedly done extensive modifications to the car’s drive system, aerodynamics and lightweight design.“The new 911 GT3 boasts even greater, standard-setting performance,” it stated.

Engine

The 911 GT3 RS is powered by a four-litre six-cylinder engine with 500 hp (368 kW) of power and 460 Newton metres of torque, combined with a specially developed PDK transmission. The engine, which has the largest displacement and most power of any naturally aspirated engine with direct fuel injection in the 911 family, accelerates the car from zero to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and to 200 km/h in 10.9 seconds.

Performance

The new 911 GT3 RS, with a lap time of seven minutes and 20 seconds, is said to beat the historic record value of the Carrera GT super sports car on the North Loop of the Nürburgring by nine seconds.

Its combined NEDC fuel consumption is 12.7 l/100 km. And it is coming with functions such as declutching by ‘paddle neutral’ which is comparable to pressing the clutch with a conventional manual gearbox – and speed limiting by the Pit Speed button.

These features allow drivers more freedom of driving dynamics, while also providing them with more assistance when driving on a circuit racetrack.

Exterior

The car is said to have a masterpiece of intelligent lightweight design. For instance, it is noted that for the first time, the roof is made of magnesium; carbon fibre is used for the engine and luggage compartment lids, and other lightweight components are made of alternative materials. This makes the RS model around 10 kilogrammes lighter than the 911 GT3.

The lightweight roof lowers the sports car’s centre of gravity which improves its lateral dynamics. The body comes from the 911 Turbo, and it signifies its status as the closest road-legal race car with its RS-specific aerodynamic add-on parts. The front spoiler lip, which extends nearly to the road, and the large rear wing reinforce its dominant look.

A 30cm wide recess extends centrally over the CRFP bonnet and the magnesium roof. This feature is a stylish reference to the recess on the luggage compartment lid of the classic 911 models with air-cooled engines, and today it identifies the two largest lightweight components in the 911 GT3 RS.

Another characteristic is the unique front wheel arch air vents that extend into the upper section of the wings – just as in thoroughbred motorsport cars, they increase down-force at the front axle.

The chassis of the 911 GT3 RS has been tuned for maximum driving dynamics and precision.

Rear-axle steering and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus with fully variable rear axle differential lock increase agility and dynamics, and the wider front and rear track widths enable even better roll stability than in the 911 GT3.

In addition, the 911 GT3 RS comes with the widest tyres of any 911 model as standard. The results: even more agile turn-in characteristics and even higher cornering speeds.

Interior

The interior design of the 911 GT3 RS with Alcantara elements is based on the current 911 GT3. One key feature is the full bucket seats based on the carbon bucket seats of the 918 Spyder.

Other standard features are the Club Sport Package with a bolted-on roll cage behind the front seats, preparation for a battery master switch, and separately provided six-point safety harness for the driver and fire extinguisher with mounting bracket.

It also has as standard the Sport Chrono Package, which features – in addition to its integrated timers – the Porsche Track Precision app for a smartphone. The Track Precision app can be used to have lap times automatically measured via the GPS, and to log data on a smartphone for many driving parameters such as vehicle speed, lateral acceleration as well as acceleration and deceleration in the driving direction. It manages this data and lets the driver share and compare it with other drivers.

The price of the vehicle in Nigeria is given as N57,553,100.

reports was the burial of 7 heads of cattle alive which would lead to my death within 7 days.

“Before the expiration of the expected time of my death, he called me on the telephone to find out if I was ill. I told him I was not.
On the 7th day, he called again and was obviously surprised that I was alive and kicking. When much later he told me the story, I told him that greater service would have been done 7 heads of cattle had they been killed and distributed to the poor”.

Atiku vows to remain in APC

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar on Tuesday vowed to remain in the All Progressives Congress through thick and thin.

He reiterated his commitment to the party and the success of its presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari and other candidates in the 2015 general elections noting that his commitment is unwavering and never been up for bargaining.

Atiku said this while reacting to speculations that he was being courted by President Jonathan to return to the Peoples Democratic Party.

This was contained in a statement by his Media Campaign Office in Abuja.

He was quoted as saying “I remain irrevocably committed to the APC, as I promised in my concession speech at the conclusion of our party’s presidential primaries, and has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the victory of General Muhammadu Buhari and other candidates of our great party at the general elections.”

The statement said that reports of the Turaki Adamawa’s purported return to the PDP or any other party is the handiwork of mischief makers focused on pitching the former Vice President against other leaders of the opposition party.

Atiku Abubakar said that for the avoidance of doubt he is unequivocally committed to the unity of APC and that it will take more than the antics of mischief makers to break that bond.

Atiku noted that his return from Adamawa, where he convened a stakeholders’ meeting and reconciled disagreeing camps within the party, towards ensuring victory for the APC bears eloquent testimony of this commitment.

It also recalled that the former Vice President currently supports the financial operations of the APC in many states, in most cases as a sole financier.

“I have backed my words and commitment with my resources to ensure that I bring my influence and support to bear on our party’s march to victory at all levels in the general election. That should be enough to shut up mischief makers bent on derailing the APC’s success at the March 28 and April 11 elections,” he said.

The Atiku Media Office observed that as one of Nigeria’s astute politicians and businessmen, there may be overtures from across political divides to the former Vice President, but restated that Atiku Abubakar has publicly stated his commitment to the APC and has privately rebuffed the approaches from all quarters.

“We can not tell the exact number that are in a carton, unless we count them. But in rough estimation, all should be less than 200,000. It is above 150,000 and less than 200,000. It is between 170,000 and 190,000.”

Last week, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Chief Timothy Ibitoye, had told journalists that the state had a shortfall of 425,454 PVCs, which were still being expected from Abuja.

He put the number of registered voters in the state at 1,795,794.

Ibitoye said the PVCs  received from Abuja were 1,370,340 out of which 860,076 had been distributed.

Jonathan sacks Agwai, appoints Akau SURE-P chairman

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday sacked Gen. Martin Luther Agwai (rtd.) as the Chairman of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme.

He has named Mr. Ishaya Dare Akau as Agwai’s replacement.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President attributed Agwai’s sack to the continuation of his efforts to continuously reposition Federal Government’s agencies for optimal delivery.

The former Chief of Army Staff had, while delivering a lecture in commemoration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s 78th birthday on Thursday, said change in leadership was inevitable, declaring that the country’s leaders must accept it and move with it.

“In life, you find out that everything needs change, if that is what the community wants, what the people want, you must give it to them and as such, it becomes inevitable.

“You can have everything nice, but if you don’t have the right leadership to propel it, it cannot go anywhere. Integrity matters, doing what is good for the larger society, and not just what you want to do for a narrow society to please yourself,” Agwai had said in his lecture titled “Imperatives of a national security framework for the development and progress of Nigeria.”

Abati’s statement on Agwai’s sack read, “In furtherance of his efforts to continuously re-energise and reposition agencies of the Federal Government for optimal service delivery, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has appointed Mr. Ishaya Dare Akau as the new Chairman of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme.

“Mr. Akau, whose appointment takes immediate effect, replaces Gen. Martin Luther Agwai (rtd.), who served as Chairman of the SURE-P until today (Tuesday).

“The new SURE-P Chairman hails from Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State and holds Bachelors’ Degrees in Arts and Law.

“Mr. Akau comes to the job with years of experience as a high-level administrator in the nation’s public service. His record of service includes tenures as Chairman of the Kaduna State Universal Education Board and Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission.

“President Jonathan thanks the outgoing Chairman of SURE-P, Gen Agwai, for his service to the nation and wishes him well in his future endeavours.”

Jonathan had on February 2014 appointed Agwai to replace the pioneer SURE-P chairman, Chief Christopher Kolade, who resigned his appointment.

As the deputy chairman, he had acted as acting chairman before the President confirmed his appointment.
