Powerful explosions rock Yemen capital

Powerful explosions rocked Sanaa Thursday night as a Saudi-led coalition carried out air strikes against Shiite rebels in control of the Yemeni capital, an AFP correspondent reported.

There were also strikes in the south of the country, while clashes continued in the southern port of Aden, the bastion of embattled President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi.

Anti-aircraft fire erupted in response to what witnesses said were air strikes by the coalition forces against a camp at Al-Istiqbal, at Sanaa’s western entrance.

Witnesses also said strikes targeted Al-Samaa military base, north of Sanaa, which is used by army units believed to take orders from their former commander, Ahmed Ali Saleh.

Saleh is the son of ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh, who is accused of allying with the rebels against the government, relying on the loyalty of troops he built up during his three-decade rule.

In the south, where rebels and forces loyal to Saleh had been pushing to expand their zone of control, two air raids targeted Al-Anad airbase, north of Aden, which rebels seized Wednesday, military sources said.

Another raid targeted a base of special forces allied with the Huthis in Qatabah, some 120 kilometres (75 miles) north of Aden, local residents said.

Jet fighters were also spotted flying over Abyan, mainly over the base of Al-Majd army brigade, which is accused of being linked to the rebels, witnesses said.

In Aden, where Hadi took refuge after escaping house arrest under Huthis in Sanaa last month, clashes between local paramilitary and rebels continued late Thursday.

A rebel-linked army unit based near Aden’s international airport had seized the facility Wednesday and clashed with local militia.

Hadi arrived in Riyadh Thursday and is expected to participate Saturday in an Arab summit in Egypt.

Dangote Cement begins operation in Senegal

The management of Dangote Cement Plc has announced the commencement of operations at its new plant in Pout, Senegal.

The firm said in a statement that the plant would meet the cement needs of Senegal, Mali and the Gambia, among others.

“The new plant, located in the Pout district of Senegal, is about 75 kilometres from Dakar, the country’s capital, and has a nominal capacity to produce 4,000 metric tonnes per day and 1.2 million metric tonnes per annum. The plant is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs, with a total production capacity of 1.5 million metric tonnes annually,” the statement read in part.

The Country Head, Dangote Industries, Senegal, Luk Haelterman, was quoted as saying that the plant had so far gulped around $250m, while actual production and sales from it started on January 10, 2015.

He added, “In this country, Dangote will not only stop at producing cement, we also have helped beyond cement, which is the idea of the owner, to become a pan-African enterprise.

“Senegal is a market with over-capacity of cement, because it had two cement factories before now. But today, Dangote has become the biggest and best because we are producing the 42.5R grade only, which is better than what we met on ground, which is the 32.5R.”

The Sales and Marketing Director, Serigne Dieng, was also quoted as saying that Senegal, with 14 million people and a Gross Domestic Product growth of four per cent, had a cement market of three million metric tonnes per year and a per capita consumption rate of 230 kilogrammes.

“Now, we have more capacity and Dangote Cement is exporting two million metric tonnes to Mali and the Gambia through rail,” he was quoted as saying.

The Chief Operating Officer of the plant, Athanasios Bampos, was also quoted as saying that the location of the factory was not only rich in limestone but also in clay and laterite, which are the major ingredients needed for cement manufacturing.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Senegal and Mauritania, Katyen Jackden, was said to have commended Dangote for bringing cohesion among African nations with his investments.

Ogun declares Friday as holiday for PVC collection

The Ogun State Government has declared Friday 27 March as a public holiday to enable registered voters collect their Permanent Voter Cards.

This is coming less than 24 hours to the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Adeoluwa Taiwo, he said the decision followed information that the Independent National Electoral Commission in the state had received additional batches of PVCs.

He appealed to all eligible voters to take advantage of the holiday to collect their cards so as to exercise their civic rights by voting the candidates of their choice.

He also urged all stakeholders to conduct themselves peacefully and eschews all forms of violence before, during and after the elections.

He said, “We advised the people of the state to abide by all electoral guidelines and avoid wearing attires and emblems of political parties to the polling stations.”

President Goodluck Jonathan has begged the North, specifically the North-East geo-political zone, to support and vote for him on Saturday.

Jonathan in a letter titled, ‘My dear Arewa brothers and sisters’, which he personally signed, said it would be unfair for anyone to blame him for the Boko Haram menace which resulted in the death of over 15,000 Nigerians.

The President admitted that his administration initially underestimated the menace and that was why the terrorists were able to kill many Nigerians.

He added that the menace was compounded by the lack of equipment.

The President, however, said the successes recorded by the Armed Forces in the last six weeks showed that he was indeed capable of curbing terrorism. He, therefore, called on northerners to vote for him in order to perfect the work he had started.

He said, “I do understand that my first duty to you at this time is to rid the entire North of the menace of Boko Haram and secure your lives and property. You and I know that nothing in Nigeria’s past prepared us for the unprecedented reign of unmitigated terror, mayhem and destruction which these murderous terrorists have visited on parts of our country.

“The initial slowness in effectively responding to the threat was as a result of the asymmetrical nature of the war on terror and the need for us to properly equip our security agencies for the successful prosecution of the war.

“Given the recent successes recorded by our Armed Forces with your cooperation and patriotic support, the cooperation of our neighbours as well as the laudable gallantry of security agents, I am confident that in the shortest possible time, the menace of Boko Haram would have been eliminated for good.”

Jonathan’s inability to curb terrorism had made him very unpopular in some northern states to the extent that he was stoned in some of the states while he was campaigning.

Jonathan said he and the people of the South-South geo-political zone supported his late predecessor, Umaru Yar’Adua who was from the North.

He, therefore, urged them to do the same for him.

He said, “Because Nigeria today is in desperate need of stability, I plead with you to join me in building on the foundation of the traditional alliance between us which has always served to keep Nigeria one strong, united and prosperous nation,” he said.

The soaring popularity of Jonathan’s main rival, Maj.Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd), of the All Progressives Congress, among the Arewa community seems to have jolted the President.

The Vice President, Namadi Sambo, also met northerners in Lagos on Thursday to beg them to vote for Jonathan for the sake of national peace and unity.

Incidentally, the wife of the President, Patience Jonathan, who has been campaigning for her husband, has avoided visiting the North-West and the North-East.

Amaechi attacked by gunmen in Rivers

RIVERS State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, escaped death by the whiskers in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area as some gunmen suspected to be political thugs fired gunshots at him.

Two members of the All Progressives Congress were said to have been seriously injured during the incident, which happened at about 6pm on Thursday as the governor embarked on a door-to-door ward campaign in the area.

An SMS sent to our correspondent through the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. David Iyofor, indicated that the thugs had also set bonfire along the road to prevent the governor from leaving.

The statement added that the thugs suspected to be working for the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, threw bottles, stones and other dangerous objects at the Governor Amaechi and his entourage.

“This evening, gunshots were fired at the Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi at Rumuolumeni, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area by PDP thugs.

“Obio/Akpor is the home of the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Nyesom Wike. The thugs attacked the governor and his entourage with bottles, stones and various dangerous objects. Then gunshots were fired at the governor.

“When the governor was leaving the community, bonfire was set up on the road to prevent him from leaving. More gunshots were fired at his convoy. Amaechi was on door-to-door ward campaign in the state,” Iyofor’s statement read.

Meanwhile, the Greater Together Campaign Organisation, a team in charge of Dakuku Peterside’s governorship campaign, described the attack on the state governor as part of the plan to assassinate chieftains and members of the APC.

Bandits storm Owo, raid banks with bombs

Dare devil armed robbers struck in Owo town, Ondo State, on Thursday, shutting down activities as well as paralising pedestrian and vehicular movement in the community.

A resident, who spoke to our correspondent on the telphone, said the robbers began robbing the banks a few minutes to 5pm, closing strategic entres into the town.

“We started hearing gunshots and as I speak to you, they are robbing nearly all the banks.

“The robbers are manning all the strategic places in the town and have deployed even bombs as you can hear the sounds even from far distances. I learnt they have moved to Skye Bank area and people have deserted the streets,” said the source, who spoke to our correspondent while the raid was ongoing.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Wole Ogodo, said the details from the incident were still sketchy, adding that the police had mobilised its men to deal with the situation.

“As I speak to you, we have heard about the incident but details are still sketchy. We have deployed our men in the scene. I will let you know when I get the details,” Ogodo said.

Inspector General of police redeploys six DIGs, other senior officers

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba, has redeployed six DIGs from the Force Headquarters to take charge of Zonal Commands for the general elections.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Force Spokesman, Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu, on Thursday in Abuja.

The IG also redeployed five Zonal AIGs.

The affected DIGs are: Dan’Azumi Doma, who is the Coordinator for the South-East Zone, Mamman Tsafe, South-South, Hashimu Argungun, South-West and Christopher Katso, North-West.

Others are: Adeola Adeniji, North-Central and Kalafite Adeyemi, Assistant Coordinator, South-West Zone.

In the category of the AIGs are: Hilary Okpara, Coordinator, North-East, Bala Nasarawa, Assistant Coordinator, North-Central and Adisa Bolanta, Assistant Coordinator, North-West.

Others are: Usman Gwary, Federal Operations (FEDOPS), Abuja, and Mark Idakwo, Zone 9, Umuahia.

Also, the I-G redeployed six Commissioners of police.

They are: Hosea Karma, who now takes charge of Rivers Command, Adamu Mohammed, Anambra, Dan Bature,Enugu,Usman Abdullahi, Katsina, Jimoh Ozi-Obeh, Benue and Hyacinth Dagala, Department of Operations (DOPs), FHQ Abuja.

The IG said the redeployment was to further re-position the force for a successful conduct of the general elections

He charged them to exhibit the highest level of personal and professional conduct in the discharge of their duties.

When I look back at my life, and all the stuff I did as a carefree, young and restless youth, I can’t help but shudder at some of my very bad habits. Yes, I was once short-fused; blowing off at the slightest provocation.

It was pitiful. Over time I have managed to rid myself of such sad habits but that can’t be said for a lot of men some of who, even late in their lives can’t still get over it, thereby losing their cool in their homes. No be small thing sha.

Domestic violence is an under reported crime in Nigeria, almost accepted as norm. Some men feel it’s their right, some feel it’s always the women who bring out the beast in them, while others will readily admit its a way of stamping their authority in the home. Sadly, many don’t see anything wrong with beating their wives.

How sad! Yes, am aware there are women who beat up their husbands, but those are in the minority and this piece ain’t about them.

The most guilty perpetrators are usually men and the victims are mostly their wives and sometimes their children too.

Men abusing women is like a defence and coping mechanism for being or feeling WEAK in other aspects of life, sometimes including deep analog beliefs about masculinity. Men who abuse loved ones tend to blame other things or people for
their violent outbursts. In some cases, it is a
cycle: “my father abused me and my mom, so, it’s normal”.

Society doesn’t help either, it ingrains in a man’s psyche that macho bullshit; how he should be strong and if he can’t exhibit that in his daily public life, it’s ok for him to go home and prove his strength.

Abusive men are not limited to a particular
status, it ranges from a bricklayer to a CEO or even a President, causing their women to
perpetually live in anxiety and fear. Most of them tip-toe around their husbands, not because they respect these men, but because of fear.

A violent man might have grown up in a
dysfunctional household but this is still not a reason to be abusive. It is an excuse, and a flimsy one at that.

Some men don’t come from humble homes where women are appreciated. Some of us come from homes that expose us to sex, gossip, male macho bullshit.

Values for treating women start with where
you’re coming from, your background. However,beyond these, what fucks most men up is our BIG FAT EGO.

It has everything to do with selfishness or
overrated feeling of self-importance. QED.
Ego is the source of many negatives in the world.

It is the false ‘self’ that Jesus said we should let die before we can gain everlasting life. Ego craves to be first, but we must be willing to be last.

Unconditional love comes with humility,
selflessness, abundant generosity, perfect
responsibility, fearless confidence. I no go brag, am not all that, but I dey try. God
knows! Now, for the man who feels trapped in this mad dance with his loved ones and is trying very hard to rid himself of this very terrible habit, do like me.

If you start to feel that your fuse is about to
burst, try and say nothing, hold it in for a few minutes and relocate yourself to another space,either in your house, or outside. Allow some time to elapse before you express yourself, never talk or let your fist run amok when you’re upset; it doesn’t make for a good picture.

Even though I have cured myself of my short fuse, i still get tempted from time to time. What works best for me now is silence.I go and lock myself in my room and will never utter a word to my lady until am sure am in control of my faculties. Since many moons ago, I have discovered that this is a very effective option in dealing with a very bad temper.

So next time you are with your woman and you feel like turning her into a punching bag, change the game, beat her with your silence for the period you feel like blowing your fuse. 

Military deploys fighter jets, attack helicopters in Gwoza to flush boko haram

A coordinated attack is set to be carried out by the military to liberate Gwoza, Borno State, from Boko Haram captivity as the defence authorities have deployed four attack helicopters and two air force fighter jets to flush out the terrorists in the areas.

A reliable source in the military told our correspondent on Thursday that the attack helicopters and the fighter jets departed Yola, Adamawa State, at about 3pm, heading for Gwoza, the last town in Borno State under the control of terror sect.

The source told our correspondent on the telephone that ground forces from Bama, Borno State, and Madagali in Adamawa State, were advancing towards Gwoza in the air and ground operation to end the reign of the insurgents in the area.

President Goodluck Jonathan, on Wednesday, promised that the terror sect would be flushed out of Gwoza, where the kidnapped Chibok girls are allegedly being kept.

AD candidate withdraws from presidential race, backs Buhari

Barely 48 hours to the Presidential election, the candidate of the Alliance for Democracy, Rafiu Salau, has withdrawn from the contest.

Salau announced his decision at a media briefing in Abuja on Friday.
He said the AD had adopted the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Mohammadu Buhari(retd.), as its candidate for Saturday’s polls.

The AD candidate explained that experience had shown that strong democracies were built with two strong political parties competing for power.
He said, “All of you, the 68 million voters, should vote for Gen. Buhari the candidate of the democrats, who will bring change. Vote APC. Show the world that you are in control of your democracy.

“You need to emulate the people of the developed democracy of the US and UK. The development of the two countries is because the people of the countries have total control of their democracy.

“No matter how good the performance of one party system, it cannot perform up to 10 per cent of a democratic system with at least two strong parties that give the people the opportunity to control their democracy.

“Salau said Nigerians had had enough of one party rule with the Peoples Democratic Party at the helm of affairs, urging the people to come out and vote on election day.
