I’ll ban importation of rice, tomato –Buhari

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Monday said if elected on February 14, he would ban the importation of basic items like rice and tomato in order to enhance local production of the products.

He also said his administration would focus on agriculture, mining, infrastructure and job provision at the top of its economic agenda.

Buhari, who gave a summary of how he intended to revive the economy in a meeting with the Organised Private Sector in Lagos, said his government would place emphasis on three key issues of security, tackling corruption and reviving the ailing economy.

The meeting, which had all the key members of the APC in attendance, was hosted by the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola.

“How can Nigeria be importing virtually everything? How can we be importing even tomatoes? If I am elected, basic items like rice and tomatoes, which we have the capacity to produce, will be banned from being imported,” Buhari said.

The APC presidential candidate said his commitment to the Nigerian people would be governed by the highest consideration for how his policies would create jobs.

He also said he would focus on the provision of infrastructure such as power and roads.

Buhari, who said he agreed with the current administration on the privatisation of the power utilities, however, said there would be a need to also privatise the transmission segment.

According to him, the privatisation of the power sector has yet to achieve the desired result because after the handing over of the assets to private investors, the hard work to connect the various parts of the power chain, supply gas, install transformers and complete substations has not been done.

He added, “Our studies show that we will require no less than 200,000 trained personnel to support the initiative to provide power and light up Nigeria.

“Apart from the inherent direct employment that this will give, the reduction in the cost of production, the savings from self-generation by Nigerians, who currently spend a lot of their income on purchase of diesel and petrol to generate their own electricity, will reduce the burden on their disposable income.”

An existing plan to build a refinery in Lagos will be supported by the Federal Government, according to Buhari.

Another area of infrastructure investment that will receive attention, according to him, is road and highway construction from one end of the country to the other.

He said his administration would concentrate on roads and highways that linked the states, while state governments would be expected to connect their respective areas to the highways.

Buhari said, “Road construction alone will unlock value chain of opportunities for construction companies, builders, engineers, architects, quarry operators, cement and iron rod producers and suppliers.

“The successful opening up of Nigeria by the construction of new roads and highways will revive road transport, truck manufacture, tyre manufacture as well as engine oil and brake pad production on one hand. It will also create a demand for job for mechanics, drivers and those engaged in transport support businesses.

“We expect a revival of all the interstate economies to thrive across Nigeria, providing support to travellers by way of canteens, restaurants, farm produce etc.”

He, however, said because corruption was affecting the performance of the economy, he would tackle it headlong if elected into office.

According to him, the alleged $20bn missing crude oil proceeds, which was estimated to be equal to about N4.2tn, were nearly a year’s budget.

He said with N5m per vehicle, the amount could provide 840,000 patrol vehicles to help improve on the security of towns and villages across the country.

The APC presidential candidate also noted that the amount could provide 311,000 buses that could revolutionise the transport sector of the economy.

He said, “If the average cost of generating one megawatt of power is about $1.5m (excluding gas and distribution costs), $20bn would have brought us over 13,333MW of power. What a difference that will make in the country!

Why Sultan, Fashola still waiting for PVC – INEC give the breakdown of the distribution

The Independent National Electoral Commission said on Monday that initial loss of data from its machine led to the loss of finger prints of some Nigerians.

It said this formed part of the reasons why the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State and others could not get their PVCs.

It nevertheless said all eligible voters, who were unable to collect their PVCs could now collect them nationwide.

Deputy Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mr. Nick Dazang, made the disclosure at a one-day workshop held for journalists in Kaduna on Monday.

He said, “Initial loss of data led to the loss of finger prints and why the Sultan of Sokoto, Governor Fashola of Lagos, and others could not get their PVC.

“What I know is that those whose data were lost and those who did the Continuous Voter Registration, their cards are now ready.

“Attitude of some INEC staff led to the loss of the data.”

He declared that notwithstanding the challenges being faced by INEC, the commission had achieved 65 per cent distribution of PVC nationally even as he expressed optimism that the percentage of PVC distribution would grow substantially before the election.

“All cards (PVC) are on the ground and are being distributed to the states,” he added.

Dazang said as of January 31, 42.7 million, representing 65 per cent national average distribution, had been achieved, but insisted that some states had achieved distribution up to between 79 and 80 per cent average.

The breakdown of the states, according to Dazang, includes Adamawa (79.5 per cent), Gombe (78 per cent), Jigawa (79 per cent), Katsina (79.4 per cent), Osun (70.7 per cent) and Taraba (80.5 per cent).

He said, “There are states that have done very well, but the national average is 65 per cent. This figure (65) is conservative.

“At the end of the one week extension, we are expecting between 79 to 80 per cent national average. Even in an examination, if you score this figure, nobody will say you did badly.

“The best INEC has done is the extension of one week and by statistics, within the first three days of distribution of PVC, cards going into millions were distributed. If we have one week extension, what stops us from distributing the balance.”

Ekiti Afenifere dissociates chapter from Jonathan’s endorsement

The Ekiti State chapter of Afenifere, the pan–Yoruba socio-political association, has dissociated itself from the reported endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election bid by the Afenifere, led by Chief Reuben Fasoranti.

Afenifere had hinged its support for Jonathan on his commitment to the restructuring of the country through the convocation of the National Conference last year.

But the Ekiti State chapter of the association, in a statement by its chairman, Chief Ibidapo Awojolu, in Ado Ekiti on Monday, said he was not part of the decision to endorse Jonathan for the February 14 election.

It said the purported endorsement was hastily done and merely reflected the mindset of a few leaders of the group that attended the Akure meeting with the President.

Awojolu said despite the tremendous respect the state had for Fasoranti’s leadership of the group, it differed with him on the endorsement of the President.

He said the decision of the Ekiti State chapter and a few other states that were not part of the decision would be made known shortly before the election.

He added, “For now, we are still studying the programmes of the various political parties and their candidates. Our position would be made known later.

“The February 14 presidential election is too important for the future of our dear country and its people and any decision on it could only be taken after a careful analysis of the situation on the ground coupled with extensive consultation.

“Despite our respect for Chief Fasoranti’s leadership of Afenifere, we are of the opinion that Afenifere cannot afford to lead its members and the Yoruba nation to endorse any candidate based on mere sentiments and selfish interests of a few.”

Egypt confirms death sentences for 183 people

An Egyptian court on Monday confirmed death sentences for 183 supporters of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood on charges of killing police officers, as authorities continued a crackdown on opponents, AFP and Reuters news agencies reported.

The men were convicted of playing a role in the killings of policemen in the town of Kardasa in August 2013, during the upheaval that followed the army’s toppling of Egypt’s former President Mohamed Morsi.

In December the court issued its preliminary verdict against 188 defendants in a mass trial, of which two were acquitted on Monday while one was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Charges against another two defendants were dropped after the court discovered that they were dead.

Monday’s verdict came after the initial sentences were sent to the grand mufti, the government’s official interpreter of Islamic law, for ratification.

The attack took place on the same day security forces violently dismantled two massive protest camps supporting Morsi in Cairo, killing hundreds of protesters in clashes.

The December verdict was the third mass death sentence of 2014, and was roundly condemned by rights groups.

“Mass death sentences are fast losing Egypt’s judiciary whatever reputation for independence it once had,” Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East and North Africa director for Human Rights Watch, said at the time.

“Instead of weighing the evidence against each person, judges are convicting defendants en masse without regard for fair trial standards,” she said.

In April 2014, Egyptians were shocked when a court passed down 683 death sentences in one trial.

In total, thousands of Brotherhood supporters have been arrested and put on mass trials in a campaign which human rights groups say shows the government is systematically repressing opponents.

President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who as army chief toppled Morsi, describes the Brotherhood as a major security threat.

The movement says it is committed to peaceful activism.

Dozens killed in Syria airstrikes

At least 44 people have been killed and dozens wounded in government airstrikes across Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

In Deraa, 15 people were killed while 25 others were wounded due to airstrikes on the district of Jassem, in what the Observatory described as a massacre.

“As usual, the regime is striking populated areas in order to make civilian supporters of opposition fighters turn against them,” Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said.

“Opposition fighters are making steady progress in Deraa province. The vast majority of the west of the province has completely fallen out of government control, and that is where Jassem is located,” Abdel Rahman added.

In Aleppo, eight people were killed including two children due to barrel bombs that dropped on a residential neighbourhood named Baydine, resulting in entire blocks being levelled to the ground.

Several others were killed in Douma, Hama, Idlib and Damascus suburbs.

Ogun plans holiday for PVC collection 2 hours

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has said if there is a need to declare a public holiday for the residents to collect their Permanent Voter Card, he will not hesitate to do so.

The governor said this on Monday at Ajebo in Obafemi/Owode Local Government Area of the state during his re- election campaign tour.

From the sources in the state Independent National Electoral Commission, less than 50 per cent of the registered residents have collected their PVC.

He said when eventually the long-awaited PVCs were brought in from Abuja to the state, and if it appeared many residents wouldn’t get them before the February 8 deadline given by INEC, he might declare a public holiday.

He said, “We will declare public holiday to allow our people obtain their cards when we see the sign that INEC is ready.

“We can’t just declare holiday when the cards are not ready. We are doing everything to sensitise our people on the importance of the cards; that is the first stage to election.”

The governor also promised to commence work on the OGTV-Kajola-Obafemi-Ajebo Road if re-elected.

He commended the former governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, who constructed the road during his tenure.

He said, “We have concluded plans to construct the road leading from OGTV down to Ajebo. You know it was done during the time of Chief Osoba. The road did not last for one and half years, but we should give it to him for doing it.

“We should not deceive ourselves, the topographic of the road is not favourable; so, the road needs a concrete work.”

Buhari Threatens Legal Action Against AIT & NTA Over “Hate Broadcasts”

All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential
candidate, Muhamadu Buhari has threatened to file a lawsuit against African Independent Television (AIT) and Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) for airing what he has described as “hate broadcasts” against his personality.

Buhari’s threats comes just shortly after the
National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) warned all broadcasting stations operating in the country to “adhere strictly to the provisions of the broadcasting code or risk sanctions,” Vanguard reports.

The presidential candidate’s legal team is
insisting that the two stations must not only
retract the “hate documentaries,” but must also issue a public apology to Buhari, and have warned that failure to do so would result in swift legal action.

Jonathan receives NNPC audit report on ‘missing’ fund

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday received the report of forensic auditors engaged to carry out a detailed investigation into the activities of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

An accounting firm, PriceWaterHouse, was in March, 2014 hired to carry out the exercise following an allegation by the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, that $20bn was not remitted to the Federation Account by the NNPC.

Sanusi, who is now the Emir of Kano, had written a letter to Jonathan that $49bbn was not remitted to the Federation Account by the NNPC.

But following the controversy which the letter generated, a committee was set up to reconcile the account.

Sanusi later said the unremitted fund was $12bn. He later again changed the figure to $20bn.

The Nigeria Country Senior Partner of PriceWaterHouse, Uyi Akpata, on Monday presented the report to the President on behalf of the firm, saying, “It is a privilege for us to have carried out this exercise on behalf of the government and I hope that you will find this report useful.”

Akpata did not give any insight into the forensic report.

In accepting the report, however, Jonathan noted that the media and indeed Nigeria would be interested in the findings.

To this end, he directed the Auditor-General of the Federation to study the report and make the key highlights public within the week.

He said,”There has been so much of controversy over this NNPC and leakages or no leakages. I remember the Senate has also looked into it; it is also good that you professionals have also looked into it.

“What appears in the papers and the speculation is also very high, the figures that I cannot even imagine the country will make are being bandied in the newspapers.

“So, I am quite pleased that you have undertaken the forensic audit. Though it is voluminous, I will give it to the professionals.

“In government work, there are people that have the statutory responsibilities to handle such assignment, which is the Auditor-General of the Federation.

“So the Auditor-General will look at it and within the week, let us have key highlights because the media will want to know the key findings vis-a-vis the Senate’s findings and figures being bandied around in the newspapers. Nigerians are interested.”

The President admitted that the nation’s petroleum sector needed to be reformed.

He expressed the hope that most of the lapses being noticed in the sector would be corrected by the time the Petroleum Industry Bill was passed into law.

While promising to handle the report decisively, Jonathan expressed the belief that the forensic report would help the nation move forward.

The President said, “Nigerians don’t need to be scared, this is something that Nigerians are interested in. They (the audit firm) wanted to submit an interim report, but I said no, they must conclude this matter, because it is a forensic audit and there is no room for interim report so they must go back and conclude it and luckily they have concluded it.

“I hope we will not call them back, but where need be, we will call them back if there are issues that are not so clear, but we are happy with what we have done so far.

“I assure you that this is a precious document that the Accountant-General will keep and I will have my own copy, because even if I leave office, maybe when I write my memoir, I will use some part of it.

“But the kind of figure people bandy in the papers look so ridiculous.”

A Professor of Dentistry at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Adeyemi Olusile, speaking at the scientific introduction of Pepsodent toothpaste by the Unilever Nigeria Plc, notes that the mouth, just like many areas of the body, teems with bacteria.

Olusile says though normally, the body’s natural defences and good oral health care, such as daily brushing and flossing, can keep these bacteria under control, without deliberate and proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral infections, such as tooth decay and gum disease.

Many people may not know what the saliva in our mouth is capable of achieving when it comes to oral health, but experts say saliva washes away food and neutralises the acids produced by bacteria in the mouth. This way, your mouth is shielded from microbial invasion or overgrowth that might lead to disease.

Again, many people are careless with the way they treat their teeth. They may break bones or ice cubes with them, while other use their teeth to pop open bottled drinks. Yet, Olusile says oral health is not just about the mouth, but it is intertwined with the health of the entire body.

The dentist warns that periodontal disease and tooth decay are the most common tooth diseases in the world, though they are quite preventable because they are bacterial in origin. “Eliminate the bacteria and you eliminate the diseases,” Olusile says.

No one can remain in good health without the proper care of the mouth-not when you realise that bacteria that exceed the number of people who live on earth co-habit with the teeth and gums in every mouth!

Scientists say in every mouth, there are about six billion bacteria! They are the major culprit in teeth decay, periodontal disease and offensive mouth breath.

Again, be warned that mouth diseases can lead to, or worsen certain health conditions; and that’s why you can’t toy with your teeth health.

For instance, Community Dentist in the Preventive Dentistry Department, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Oyinkan Sofola, warns that endocarditis (an infection of the inner lining of the heart) can result when bacteria or other germs from another part of the body, such as the mouth, spread through the bloodstream and attach to damaged areas in the heart.

The specialist also warns that the inflammation and infections caused by oral bacteria can contribute to incidence of heart disease, clogged arteries and stroke.

Worse still, gynaecologists say periodontitis (a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports the teeth) has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight; whereas those who live with diabetes may suffer more frequent and severe gum disease, and they may have a harder time controlling their blood sugar levels as a result.

Those living with HIV/AIDS are also advised to take their oral health more seriously because oral problems, such as painful mouth ulcers (mucosal lesions), are common in people with this condition. Therefore, they can’t be careless with their oral health.

In addition, those who suffer from osteoporosis – a condition that causes bones to become weak and brittle – must avoid mouth infections if they don’t want to suffer bone loss between the two roots of a tooth (periodontal bone loss) and subsequent tooth loss.

Of course, your dietary habit also matters when it comes to maintaining oral health. Olusile says conditions such as malnutrition, deficiency in vitamins A and C and in protein can all affect your teeth health.

And for women, the specialists warn that hormonal disturbances such as puberty, menopause and pregnancy take a toll on teeth health, hence the need to handle your teeth with care.

And if you are a smoker, you have a herculean task ahead, as tobacco smoking and chewing have been known to harm teeth health immensely.

There was a security breach at the private general aviation terminal, Execujet, on Sunday, when a male teenager, Samuel Ogundeyi, suspected to be a stowaway, was arrested in the tyre compartment of an aircraft.

The aircraft was parked in the hangar of Execujet terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

A reliable source within the private terminal, who refused to have his name in print said the teenager was discovered at about 12 noon when pilots of the aircraft marked M-MYNA, were carrying out a routine inspection on the aircraft before starting the engine.

The commanding pilot of the aircraft was said to have detected the boy in the tyre compartment of the aircraft.

The suspect also had in his possession two handsets without SIM cards, which he claimed were his.

In his confessional statement, the suspect claimed he had entered the hangar through the facility of the Headquarters, Air Defence Corps of Nigerian Air Force, located next to the Presidential/VIP Lounge in the airport, on Saturday night with the help of a person he identified only as ‘a brother’.

This supersedes the earlier deadline of Saturday,31st January 2015, and is intended to give registered voters yet to collect their PVCs the opportunity to do so in readiness for the February 2015 general elections.

Stranded Passengers Shut Down Abuja Airport

The angry passengers whose flight was canceled without explanation blocked the boarding gate of the airport.Passengers who were stranded at the Nnamdi Azikwe International on Friday, January 30 shut down activities as they protested over the incessant flight delays.
According to Premium Times, the passengers who were scheduled to travel to Ibadan by Arik Air were left stranded for hours by the airline.To show their grievances, the angry passengers shut down operations at the airport as they blocked the boarding gate of the airport and did
not allow Arik and other airlines to board

Waheed, said that the aborted flight was
originally schedule for 3.25pm but as at 9:30pm,they were still at the airport.

bus to take us to the tarmac so that we could board the plane and leave for Ibadan.
Although we entered the bus, yet the driver later told us to get down. In short, that was the point we were told the flight had been cancelled, after we had spent over four hours at the airport,” Mr.Waheed said.
According to him, the passengers have not been able to assess their luggage, which had already been checked in and that neither airport officials nor Arik Air staff had explained to them why the flight was cancelled

According to the bulletin, the holiday will start from February 11 and end on March 4.

It also stated that hostels and lecture theatres would be under lock and key throughout the period.

The bulletin quoted the Rector of the college, Dr Margaret Ladipo, as appealing to the students to comport themselves during the holiday.

Mixed reactions, however, trailed the announcement, as some students said the holiday would disrupt the second semester academic calendar.

Others commended the management for being safety conscious and allowing students, who are not residents in Lagos to travel for the elections.

Miss Ronke Adeyemi, a National Diploma, Science and Laboratory Technology part-time student, told the News Agency of Nigeria, that it was a good decision.

“It is a good decision and I am happy with it. It is very risky for us to stay on campus during the elections because anything can happen.

“I will use the period to read and prepare for my test because as soon as we resume in March, we are starting our test,’’ she said.

Another student, who pleaded anonymity, said the holidays was too long and would deny the students the opportunity to receive enough lectures and prepare for examinations.

The National Diploma Textile Technology student said the holiday should be reduced to 10 days in the interest of the students.

German ex-president Weizsaecker dies at 94

Germany’s former president Richard von Weizsaecker has died at the age of 94.

Weizsaecker challenged the country’s attitudes about the Holocaust by arguing that the country had been liberated by the Nazi defeat in 1945. His death was announced by incumbent President Joachim Gauck’s office on Saturday.

During his 10 years in the office, Weizsaecker did not shy away from thorny political debates such as on integration, and won recognition and respect at home and abroad.

He presided over the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990, 11 months after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Weizsaecker was most remembered for a landmark speech in May 1985 marking the 40th anniversary of the end of the second World War in which he urged Germans to come to terms with responsibility for the Holocaust, stirring controversy by saying Germany had been liberated by the Third Reich’s downfall.

“All of us, whether guilty or not, whether young or old, must accept the past. We are all affected by its consequences and liable for it. Anyone who closes his eyes to the past is blind to the present. The 8th of May was a day of liberation. It freed us all from the system of National Socialist tyranny.”

Ramadan – fasting month

Maldives is a Muslim country, hence all Maldivian staff on the islands mark the Month of Ramadan every year. No service available at the resorts will be interrupted because of this.

Drinks

Almost all the canned drinks and liquors are imported and drinks are a little more expensive. Maldives is a Muslim nation and alcoholic drinks are available on resort islands, no alcohol may be taken into the country. Tourists are required to store any alcoholic drinks with the customs on arrival and they can collect these items on their departure.

Water

Most resort islands have desalination plants to filter ‘island water’ while others offer fresh water (rainwater). During periods of heavy demand or low rainfall, water supplies may be restricted on few islands, although ‘island water’ is always adequate for washing and showers. Most islands offer heated water. On live-aboard vessels, fresh water is available at baths and toilets and for drinking you’ll get bottled mineral water.

Diving

A medical certificate of physical fitness is required for all those taking a diving package.

Qualified divers must bring their log book and copies of diving certificates.

As diving is not usually covered by holiday insurance policies, we strongly advise that you check and if necessary take out the extra cover.

One should not dive within 24 hours of arrival or departure.

       Minimum age is 12 years.

       Tank and weights only – means you must take you own regulator and stab jacket.

       It is recommended that divers bring their own mask and snorkel.

       Diving may be booked at the time of booking or after arrival at the resort.

Snorkeling

Almost every island has its own house reef. The resorts also arrange trips to nearby reefs and un-inhabited island nearby. The guests on live-aboard can snorkel at any spot they anchor – they normally anchor at secure reefs on fishing villages and deserted islands. It is recommended that divers bring their own mask, snorkel and fins.

Hoodlums snatch over 14,000 PVCs in Rivers

Ahead of the 2015 general elections in Rivers State, more than 14,000 Permanent Voter Cards have been snatched from officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission in the state.

The items, which were meant for the forthcoming elections, were forcefully taken away by hoodlums while they were being distributed during the collection exercise in the state.

Disclosing the development to journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital on Friday, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Gesila Khan, said some of the items were snatched at local government collection centres.

Khan stated that the PVCs were deposited at the local government collection centres to enable original owners to take delivery of them.

Expressing shock over the hoodlums’ action, Khan said it was one of the highest cases of stolen PVCs in the country.

She, however, added that the stolen cards were useless and meaningless as a result of the introduction of card readers in the forthcoming general elections.

She promised that over 50,000 PVCs would be distributed to their owners within two weeks before the general elections, maintaining that over 80 per cent of registered voters in the state had collected their PVCs.

She said her office had received 2,990,056 PVCs and distributed about 1.8 million of them.

Khan said, “I am appealing to Rivers people because we have lost a lot of cards. We have lost more than 14,000 PVCs and the loss is one of the highest figures in the federation. All the cards that were snatched are useless and meaningless because we are going to use a new system called card readers.

“Your cards are just like ATM cards. You take it there and they slot it into the card reader to confirm if it is yours before you are allowed to vote. So, it is meaningless if you go there with someone else’s voter’s card.

“I’m advising those of you with other peoples’ cards to return them to the local government offices so that the rightful owners can collect so they can participate in the general elections.

“On the presentation of the PVC by a voter, polling officer will slot it into the card reader to confirm if it belongs to the voter. The next stage is the confirmation of your fingerprints by the card reader before you are allowed to vote.

“If you go to the polling booth with someone else’s voter card, you would not be able to vote because each card is unique and can only be authenticated by the real owner. The PVCs are meaningless to those who have stolen them.”

The state REC pointed out that apart from registration, the voter cards were now being used in banks as means of identification.

PDP, LP, APC members defect to Oyo AA

About 272 politicians have defected to the Action Alliance in Oyo State.

The politicians, who dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party and the All Progressives Congress, were received by AA governorship candidates, Mr. Taiwo Otegbeye, at an event held in Ipapo area of Itesiwaju Local Government Area of the state.

Taiwo Ojo, who spoke on behalf of the new members, said that they were motivated by the personality of Otegbeye who he described as a politician endowed with the ideas to develop the state.

He said, “We finally resolved to support AA because of the leadership qualities possessed by the party’s governorship candidate.

“Otegbeye’s name was omitted by the Independent National Electoral Commission in the last election, but embraced peace by accepting to serve the current administration.

“We believe he has great vision for Oyo State which can become reality if we support him and also mobilise support for him.”

While welcoming the new members, Director General of the Action Alliance, Mr. Jide Olaniran, urged them to work hard for the success of the party.

Otegbeye, however, promised to focus on agriculture, establish industries and construct roads to link villages.

47 die in Taraba, Benue fresh violence

No fewer than 47 people have been killed in fresh violence in Taraba and Benue states.

Many other people were also injured in the attack.

In Taraba State, 27 were killed a fresh violence at Nwonko village in Wukari Local Government Area of the state, while 20 were killed in Benue State.

Our correspondent gathered the attack began at the early hours of the day leading to destruction of farmlands and other property worth several millions of naira.

The member representing Wukari Constituency in the state House of Assembly, Daniel Gani, said most of the victims were women and children.

He said “At the beginning, we thought the attackers were Boko Haram insurgents from Maiduguri because of their large numbers. But we discovered later that they were Fulani herdsmen.”

The police spokesperson, Mr. Joseph Kwaji, confirmed the incident, but said nine people were killed.

Also, gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen invaded Anyiin in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State and killed 20 persons.

A resident, who identified himself as Kume, said 20 bodies were counted after the attack.

But the local government chairman, Mr. Kester Kyenge, said that 15 bodies were seen of the time of the last count.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. John Bako, confirmed the attack, but said five bodies had been discovered so far while a search is ongoing for the others.

A lawyer and activist, Sonia Ajoko, condemned the attack and urged the state government to assist the injured victims.

I sacrificed my presidential ambition for Buhari –Tinubu open up

A former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Friday said he sacrificed his presidential ambition for the All Progressives Congress candidate, Gen Muhammadu Buhari.

Tinubu stated this while addressing a crowd of APC supporters at the party’s presidential rally in Lagos.

He said Nigeria was facing an economic crisis and an internal war and needed a person with Buhari’s experience because of the General’s reputation of anti-corruption and military warfare.

Tinubu said, “People define patriotism as putting the country first but this is what the ‘Poverty Development Party’ refuses to understand. We chose Buhari not because Bola Tinubu is not interested in the Presidency. I am capable, competent, qualified, younger and richer but there comes a time that people must make sacrifices for their nation.

“I prayed that Nigeria would get better and we would not need a man like him (Buhari). But today, we are in a great crisis; we face a lot of challenges. When South Africa was in a great dilemma and was about to disintegrate, they called Nelson Mandela of 74 years old.

“He used his wisdom to save his country. When the United States was in economic depression, they called 73-year-old Ronald Reagan because he was frugal and incorruptible.

“When America was faced with depression and war, they called a retired General, Dwight Eisenhower, to rescue the country and the country was returned on a path of success. “When France was faced with war and economic depression, they called a retired General, Charles De Gaul, to rescue the country.

Tinubu added that whether Buhari presented a certificate or not, he was still qualified to rule the country.

“So what do we need now? Buhari. This is the time for us. General Buhari, whether you are qualified or not qualified, we are calling you to come and rescue us in Nigeria,” he said.

Also speaking at the rally, the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, said President Goodluck Jonathan had done nothing for the people of the state despite the fact that the President got over 1.2 million votes from the state in 2011.

He said every project that the Federal Government was supposed to have assisted Lagos in executing had been frustrated by the Jonathan administration.

He, therefore, asked the people of the state to vote for the APC at all levels.

Buhari, who was the last person to speak at the rally, said the failure of the PDP-led Federal Government was unprecedented in the history of Nigeria.

Buhari said, “We all know what we have gone through in the past 16 years under the PDP. The APC has identified three core problems that must be tackled immediately. First is insecurity, two is the destruction of the economy and three is corruption.

“But whatever we have to do, we will have to secure Nigeria first. What is happening in the North-East where hundreds of people are being killed is unacceptable. We known that the Nigeria Police and the Nigerian Army are capable of bringing peace and stability into the country but they just need good leadership.”

Ex-militant leaders issue seven-day ultimatum to Danjuma

Former Niger Delta militant leaders have issued a seven-day ultimatum to a former Minister of Defence, Lt.-Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, to apologise to them for calling for their arrest.

The militants, who spoke under the auspices of Leadership, Peace and Cultural Development Initiative, also declared Danjuma a persona non-grata in the oil rich region.

In a statement signed on Friday by the group’s President, Pastor Reuben Wilson, the leaders said Danjuma was among the northerners that had been benefitting from the oil produced in the region.

The former defence minister had called for the arrest of the ex-militant leaders such as Government Ekpemudo, alias Tompolo, and Mujahid Asari-Dokubo over their threat that they would cause violence in the country if President Goodluck Jonathan should lose the next election.

Wilson said Danjuma was courting trouble for calling for the arrest of Asari-Dokubo and Tompolo.

The group’s statement read, “Our attention has been drawn to publications credited to T.Y. Danjuma, a former defence minister, calling for the arrest of former Niger Delta freedom fighters, including our frontline selfless leader and hero, Alhaji Mujahid Asari Dokubo.

“As much as he has the right to free speech, Danjuma ought to know that the oil money he is enjoying today through his ownership of oil blocs came from our sacrifices and blood. We staked our lives to fight for the development of our country.

“We fought for freedom for our land and it pains us that people like Danjuma, who reaped bountifully from the Niger Delta, can wake up to insult our sensibilities. For Danjuma to call for the arrest of Asari-Dokubo, then he has walked on the tail of the serpent.

“The much we know is that we, the ex-militants who decided to drop our guns to join forces with the Federal Government to develop the country, especially the Niger Delta have never said anything or taken any action that would warrant such explosives from Danjuma.”

Eating apple daily increases sexual arousal in women –Study

It is a common saying that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. But beyond the health benefits of apple for both men and women, it seems to have a lot to contribute to the sexual satisfaction of women, as it has been found to improve their sex lives. Thus, there is a link between apple and sexual performance for women.

Previous findings have shown that eating apple has many benefits, including its ability to reduce the risk of diabetes and heart attack, ward off breast cancer, lower blood fat levels in post menopausal women and reduce the risk of stroke.

In fact, eating apple everyday for six months was found to cut cholesterol by almost a quarter, apart from the fact that it prevents dementia (loss of brain functions that occurs with certain diseases) and improves neurological health by reducing cellular death. These were attributed to its high-fibre content and that it produces more saliva to reduce tooth decay and detoxify the liver.

Interestingly, apple is not the only common edible item that can help women to be aroused, some previous studies revealed that red wine and chocolate also help women to become aroused, because of the resveratrol compound found in both and the presence of sexually stimulating polyphenols and antioxidants in them.

However, beyond all these heart-warming benefits, study by researchers at Santa Chiara Regional Hospital in Trento, Italy, showed that daily apple consumption enhances the sex life of women and helps them to be sexually satisfied. They believe that the compound phloridzin present in apples play a large role in sexual arousal and vaginal lubrication in women and ultimately their sexual satisfaction.

The researchers indeed found that women who eat apples regularly are more likely to have better sex because of some nutrients in the fruit, even though many people, especially women, eat apple for fun, without necessarily understanding its impact on their sexual life.

In the study, which lasted for eight months, the researchers, who sought to find a link between daily apple consumption and sexual libido, studied 781 Italian women aged between 18 and 43.

The researchers established that these women had no history or complaint of sexual disorder or depression and they ascertained that none of the women was taking prescription medications for the two ailments.

Thereafter, they were divided into two groups, with one section instructed to eat between one and two apples a day and the other section told not to eat any. Then, the participants were asked to fill a Female Sexual Function Index, a form, which asked 19 questions about their sexual activities including orgasm, lubrication, frequency of sexual intercourse, overall sexual satisfaction and were asked to report on their daily consumption of the apples as instructed.

The researchers found that eating an apple a day was linked with higher FSFI scores by the participants, which suggested that it increased their overall sexual function or pleasure.

They found that the women who consumed apple daily had higher scores on the sexual function index, especially in the lubrication and sexual performance categories, than those who didn’t eat apple, suggesting that those women who ate apples on a regular basis had a greater sexual function, thereby reporting higher levels of arousal and satisfaction.

The extent to which sex would be enjoyed by a woman depends largely on how lubricated the vagina is, because it reduces friction that may arise from the man’s penile penetration. Inadequate lubrication may put the man and the woman in serious pains and either of them could sustain injuries on their genitals.

The researchers established that apples contain phloridzin, a crystalline glucoside that is structurally similar to a female sex hormone, estradiol, which plays a huge role in vaginal lubrication and sexual arousal. Hence, the phloridzin, which is extracted from the bark of fruits like apple, improves female sexuality and lubrication.

According to the study, published in Archives of Gynaecology and Obsterics, the fruit also contains polyphenols and antioxidants that can increase blood flow to the genitals, hence, boosting arousal and sexual performance.

“We found that women who regularly ate apples, at least one a day, had better quality sex life,” Tommaso Cai, one of the lead researchers, told The Local.

Cai said that while good physical health and daily intake of vegetables also help boost women’s sexual desire, the most important factor is floridazina, a compound found beneath the skin of the apple that is similar to the hormone estradiol, which plays an important role in female sexual arousal.

He said, “All the women who included an apple or more a day in their diet ate them unpeeled and they scored higher on the sex-related questions.

“But fear not ladies, you don’t have to restrict yourselves to fruit and vegetables to feel aroused, wine and chocolate are also aphrodisiacs. A research few years ago found that the antioxidants in wine and chocolate also help improve sex.

“Apples contain polyphenols and antioxidants, which can increase blood flow to the genitalia (the genitals), as well as phloridzin, a type of estrogen similar to the female sex hormone estradiol that improves vaginal lubrication. Consequently, the more apples women consume, the higher the level of lubrication and sexual function.

“It’s also possible that the sexual health benefits come more from apple peels, which have high concentrations of helpful phenolic compound, than from the apples themselves.

Reacting to the study, a consultant endocrinologist, Dr. Michael Olamoyegun, said estradiol, which is the main hormone in females, enhances vaginal lubrication and sexual performance, adding that anything that contains it or the ingredients needed for its production would give the same benefits.

“If apple contains a compound that has similar structure with estradiol, it may probably have the same sexual benefits for women; lubricating the vagina and increasing libido because those are the functions of estradiol or oestrogen.

“Also, anything that will enhance further synthesis of estradiol will still serve the same function because even if apple does not contain estradiol but contains the ingredient from which it would be produced, then, apple would increase the concentration of the compound in the body and enhance those functions.”

He explained that if there is lubrication, there would be enhanced sexual performance, noting that the absence of the lubrication is what makes sex painful for women who have reached menopause because of the dryness in their vagina.

“In menopausal women, the oestrogen or estradiol is low and that is why they have tightness and dry vagina. This explains why they have pain while having sex and that is why we tell them to use cream that contains estradiol for lubrication,” he added.

Olamoyegun explained that almost all fruits contain polyphenols and antioxidants and eating food items or fruits that contain these compounds would increase blood flow.

“If apple contains high concentration of polyphenols and antioxidants, it will increase blood flow, and once you have blood flow to a particular organ, it will enhance its elasticity such that the place tends to expand during sexual performance and there won’t be pain, as it would also increase satisfaction,” he added.

Also commenting on the study, a nutritionist, Dr. Okunola Oladimeji, said even though the study had not been done in Nigeria, the study is true because of the many benefits of eating apple.

“Apple has powerful antioxidants and it contains so many things that are good for health, so I want to agree that it is possible,” he said.

Your cell phone should remain in your purse and never be taken out during a meal. If need be, excuse yourself from the table to check in with babysitters or any other emergencies. Manchester United not planning any signings -Louis Van Gaal

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed the Old Trafford outfit will not look to bring in more new signings in the January transfer window.

The Red Devils completed an 18-month deal for Victor Valdes earlier in the month and have been heavily linked with a number of players including Mats Hummels and Aymeric Laporte.

But the former Barcelona and Netherlands coach is now looking to sell players, while he also believes the window helps the richer clubs as they look to improve their squads mid-season.

Military confirms sacking Boko Haram from Michika

Defence Headquarters on Friday confirmed that its troops had sacked the terrorists, who had been occupying Michika and its environs in Adamawa for more than four months.This was contained in a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, in Abuja.
The statement said extensive mop-up operation and search for arms or stranded terrorists and other casualties were ongoing.

It said assault on terrorists’ main positions was concluded on Thursday as many of them died in the combat.

The statement added that troops, who sustained injuries in the operation, were receiving medical attention.

“Other troops are continuing the pursuit of those who are on the run from the town. Normalcy has been restored accordingly,’’ it said.

The statement also said Nigerian officers in key command positions of the Multi-National Joint Task Force were in the process of accounting for their actions.

It explained that the actions of the officers had led to the loss of weapons, men and location in their sphere of responsibility in the mission area.

It added that the exercise was a normal military procedure in major operations or after encounters.

A Nigerian man with 58 wives and 300 children has revealed that he wants more children. According to a report on Worldwide Weird News,Chief Simon Ado from Aji community of Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State wants to even build a separate village for his descendant.

The 68 year-old herbalist also known as Onuwa,African Solomon or Satan is Sleeping, believes that such a massive family should be able to form a village on their own which he intends to name Onuwa.With 58 wives, Chief Simon Ado is not yet done.According to the report, he wants to marry more and have more children because he is sexually
active.

4 Year Old Boy Brutally Attacked By Dogs, Returns Home From India

Omonigho Abraham, the 4 year old boy who was violently attacked by dogs owned by a neighbour in his family home in Lagos, returned from India alongside his dad yesterday January 29th after a successful operation in the country.

Omo had been in India since late last year.
Omo’s dad praised the doctors in India for the successful completion of the operation, thanking God for ensuring that his son can now live a normal life.

INEC to extend PVCs distribution beyond January 31

The Independent National Electoral Commission is set to extend the distribution of the Permanent Voter Cards beyond January 31, one of our correspondents has learnt.

The commission also said that it had pushed 65 million cards to the voters and that it was about receiving the balance of 3.4 million cards from the contractors.
