election on March 28, and things are shaping up already for the big day. The parties are rounding off their campaigns. INEC is doing mock elections to test run its equipment and operations. The world is watching what’s going to happen in the coming weeks. 1. Benue
Benue is a predominantly Christian state in the middle belt. In the last election Jonathan best Buhari here and clinched over 66% of the votes.Buhari might lose here again this year. The state is run by a PDP government.

2. Kogi
Jonathan soundly beat Buhari in Kogi in 2011. He got 70% of the votes. Kogi has a significant Christian population and is governed by the PDP.

3. Plateau
Jonathan defeated Buhari in Plateau by a wide margin last time. Plateau is mainly Christian and has a PDP government.

4. Abuja
This is the seat of government where President Jonathan is in charge. He grabbed over two-thirds of the votes in 2011 and won comfortably.The federal government-run things in Abuja and this could be a disadvantage to Buhari.

5. Taraba
Buhari only mustered half the number of votes Jonathan won in this state last time. It’s a mainly Christian state and the government is PDP.

6. Adamawa
Buhari bowed to Jonathan here in 2011. It’s one of the two states in the northeast where Buhari lost to Jonathan. It’s predominantly Christian state.

7. Abia
Jonathan won 99% of the votes here while
Buhari won less than 1%. The east is Buhari’s worst nightmare. Abia is mainly Christian.

8. Ebonyi
Again Buhari fared woefully here last time. He didn’t even get 1,000 votes here. The PDP is in charge in Ebonyi.

9. Anambra
Anambra is run by the APGA but the people are leaning towards Jonathan. Anambra is the heart of Igbo territory. A Buhari victory is unlikely here.

10. Enugu
Like Anambra, Enugu is the heart of Igbo
territory. Jonathan neatly beat Buhari here last time. The general didn’t get 0.5% of the votes here. The people are likely going to vote Jonathan. It’s a PDP state.

11. Bayelsa
A Buhari win in Bayelsa will be a complete
miracle. This is Jonathan’s home. He swept
virtually all the votes here last time. It may not happen like that again this month, but surely his people will get behind him.

12. Delta
This state is strongly PDP and more likely to vote Jonathan than Buhari. Jonathan won over 98% of the votes here in 2011. Buhari hardly commands any following in this state.

13. Edo
Governor Oshiomhole’s popularity has dwindled in the past few years and so even though the state government is run by Buhari’s party, it’s not certain that the general would take the prize here. But it’s possible.

14. Akwa Ibom
Akwa Ibom voted resoundingly for Jonathan in 2011 and it’s a PDP state. Buhari will have a hard time taking this state.

15. Cross Rivers
Cross Rivers has a PDP government. Buhari lost to Jonathan here in the previous election.Jonathan is more likely to win here despite everything.

16. Ekiti
Ekiti is one of two states in the west controlled by the PDP. The governor is chiefly behind Jonathan and he’s got a huge grassroots following. He’s a man of the people. He’s capable of swaying his people.

17. Ondo
Ondo is the other state in the west controlled by the PDP. Like Governor Fayose of Ekiti, Ondo governor Mimiko also has a strong grassroots following and is backing Jonathan. But maybe Buhari can surmount the challenge and snatch a win in this state.

5. Bauchi
It was an easy win for Buhari in Bauchi last time where he pocketed 82% of the votes. Jonathan almost certainly has no chance of winning in Bauchi this year or in any state in the north east for that matter.

6. Zamfara
Zamfara is a core Muslim state in the north west.Buhari is king here as he is in the rest of the north west. Last time he cleanly swept this zone and Jonathan lost in all the states including Zamfara. This zone is Jonathan’s worst nightmare.

7. Sokoto
Here’s another mainly Muslim state that will be hard for Jonathan to win. He lost here last time even though the PDP runs things in the state. It’s not likely he can turn around the situation this year.

8. Kebbi
Buhari defeated Jonathan in Kebbi state in 2011.He’s apparently going to win it here again this time. Jonathan’s popularity in the area hasn’t improved pretty much in the last four years.

9. Katsina
This is where Buhari comes from. His victory in this state is indisputable.

10. Kano
Kano is another stronghold of Buhari. It was a walkover for him here in the last election. Now the APC is also in charge in Kano. Jonathan barely has a chance in this state.

11. Kaduna
Jonathan narrowly lost to Buhari here in 2011 even though the state has a Muslim majority. It’s another state where he might lose this month.However, the state is PDP.

12. Jigawa
Buhari beat Jonathan in Jigawa last year and is a lot more popular than the president in this state.But Jonathan might still draw the votes given his party is in charge in the state.

13. Rivers
The governor Rotimi Amaechi is one of
Jonathan’s principal enemy and he’s Buhari’s campaign chief. Jonathan knocked out Buhari completely the last time, but this time the APC have the momentum and the equation has changed.

14. Imo
Buhari’s party runs the government in this Igbo state and the governor Rochas Okorocha is highly popular among the masses. He can and will probably influence the voters here in favour of his party’s candidate. A Jonathan victory here is uncertain.

15. Oyo
Jonathan packed the most votes in the west last time, but things have since changed with the APC merger. Now the west is rooting for Buhari, and Oyo is no exception. Jonathan’s popularity has greatly dipped among the Yorubas.

16. Osun
Even last time when Jonathan won in other
Yoruba states, he lost in this one. The governor Rauf Aregbesola is so popular in the state and he’s definitely campaigning for his party, the APC. Jonathan virtually has no chance of winning here.

17. Ogun
Ogun is obviously leaning towards Buhari and the APC like the other Yoruba states. Jonathan hasn’t got a strong enough following here to challenge the APC.

18. Lagos
Protesters will predictably pour out on the streets of Lagos if Jonathan happens to win there. He’s the least popular candidate on the ballot among the Lagos people. He beat Buhari in this city the last time, but now it’s a lot harder for him to repeat that feat in this election.

Ivory Coast jails ex-first lady 20 years for election violence

A court in Ivory Coast on Tuesday found former first lady Simone Gbagbo guilty of charges related to her role in a 2011 post-election crisis in which around 3,000 people were killed, sentencing her to 20 years in prison, her lawyer said.

Gbagbo, who is also wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged crimes against humanity, was tried along with 82 other allies of ex-President Laurent Gbagbo.

“The jury members retained all the charges against her, including disturbing the peace, forming and organising armed gangs and undermining state security,” said Rodrigue Dadje.

Her civil rights will also be suspended for a period of 10 years.

The former president’s son, Michel Gbagbo, was also convicted and sentenced to five years in prison, he said.

Ivory Coast’s brief 2011 civil war was sparked by Laurent Gbagbo’s refusal to acknowledge his defeat to Alassane Ouattara, now president, in elections in late 2010.

He is awaiting trial at the ICC accused of crimes against humanity for his alleged role in orchestrating the violence.

Ivory Coast refused to transfer Simone Gbagbo to The Hague court, claiming she could be judged fairly in a domestic court.

BREAKING News! Atiku Abubakar Set To Dump APC And Back The Re-election Bid Of President Jonathan

Eighteen days to the presidential election some chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have put former Vice President Atiku Abubakar under intense pressure to dump the All Progressives Congress (APC) and back the re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan.
Also, Atiku’s supporters, who feel shortchanged in APC are urging him to throw his weight behind the President, since he did not realise his ambition of being the standard bearer of the opposition party.
Daily Sun gathered that those making overtures to Atiku believe that having lost the APC ticket,owning to the support governors and National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu gave to General Muhammadu Buhari, the former vice president should be aggrieved.
Those working to get Atiku to support Jonathan believed that since he has not been participating actively in the campaigns of the APC, he may be nursing a grudge against leaders of the party and
therefore, could accept to return to PDP. Details of the offer to the former vice president were not revealed, but sources say that it may not be far from the 2019 presidential ticket of the PDP.
While Atiku is reportedly noncommittal yet to the overtures from the President’s camp, he is said not to have kicked against the planned defection of his supporters, who feel cheated in the APC.
Such supporters, especially in the South-West,who have indicated interest to join the PDP, it was gathered, are also mounting serious pressure on Atiku, saying they have no stake in the APC with the loss of the presidential ticket.
Meanwhile, it was gathered that the APC
leadership is worried about Atiku’s non-
involvement in the campaign of Buhari. Daily Sun learnt that the South-West arm of the Atiku Campaign Organisation may, short of declaring support for Jonathan, come out in the next few days to condemn the treatment of their principal in the APC.
Sources revealed that the party recently sent the Director-General of Muhammadu Buhari’s Presidential Campaign Organisation and Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, to seek a rapprochement.
At the meeting, it was gathered, the Atiku camp told Governor Amaechi that his failure to attend the rallies was because the former vice president is only notified of venues of the campaign,without getting him involved in the planning.
Also, the APC’s effort to get funding from the Atiku camp failed, as the party was told that the former president spent hugely on mobilisation and advertisement towards the party’s primary election, which he eventually lost.

Obama declares Venezuela a national security threat

US President Barack Obama has issued an executive order declaring Venezuela a national security threat, and slapped sanctions on seven officials.

“Venezuelan officials past and present who violate the human rights of Venezuelan citizens and engage in acts of public corruption will not be welcome here, and we now have the tools to block their assets and their use of US financial systems,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said in a statement on Monday.

“We are deeply concerned by the Venezuelan government’s efforts to escalate intimidation of its political opponents. Venezuela’s problems cannot be solved by criminalising dissent,” he added.

The White House said that the executive order targeted people whose actions undermined democratic processes or institutions, had committed acts of violence or abuse of human rights, were involved in prohibiting or penalising freedom of expression, or were government officials involved in public corruption.

The seven individuals named in the order would have their property and interests in the US blocked or frozen and they would be denied entry into the United States. American citizens would also be prohibited from doing business with them.

The White House called on Venezuela to release all political prisoners, including “dozens of students,” and warned against blaming Washington for its problems.

“We’ve seen many times that the Venezuelan government tries to distract from its own actions by blaming the United States or other members of the international community for events inside Venezuela,” Earnest said in the statement.

“These efforts reflect a lack of seriousness on the part of the Venezuelan government to deal with the grave situation it faces.”

Solar-powered Swiss plane attempts flight around the world

A Swiss solar-powered plane has taken off from Abu Dhabi, marking the start of the first attempt to fly around the world without a drop of fuel.

The Solar Impulse 2, piloted by Andre Borschberg of Switzerland, took off at 7:12am local time (0412 GMT) on Monday from the UAE’s Al-Bateen airport and headed to Muscat, the capital of Oman, where it is expected to land later after the first leg of the journey.

The developers say the aim is to create awareness about replacing “old polluting technologies with clean and efficient technologies”.

Andre Borschberg, Solar Impulse co-founder, was at the controls of the single-seater when it took off from the Al Bateen airport in the United Arab Emirates on Monday morning.

The take-off, which was originally scheduled for Saturday but delayed due to high winds, capped 13 years of research and testing by Borschberg and fellow Swiss pilot Bertrand Piccard.

They will take turns to fly the plane around the world and switch seats during stopovers.

Two hours and 15 minutes into the flight, Borschberg was 13 percent of the way to Muscat and attempting to give media interviews before calling his wife, according to a website monitoring his progress.

financial shape that its principal owner, Raymond Dokpesi,had decided to sell it to the banks to which the station owed several billions of Naira, is now back in good

Our investigation reveals that AIT receives N5 million each time an episode of any of the documentaries is aired on their channels in different Nigerian markets.

Mbeki, Abdulsalami meet Buhari in Kaduna

A former South African President, Thabo Mbeki, and a former Head of State,Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, on Monday met with the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), in Kaduna ahead of the rescheduled March 28 presidential election across the country.

At the closed-door meeting at the Jabi Road office of the Katsina-born former Head of State, in the heart of the city, neither the august visitor nor the APC presidential candidate uttered a word to journalists that besieged the venue after the about one hour meeting, which stated at about 10am..

The guests had met with President Goodluck Jonathan, who is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the coming election, in Abuja on Monday.

Abubakar, who is also the Chairman of the Peace Accord signed by the two leading presidential candidates, left for the Kaduna International Airport to catch a flight back to Abuja, after a photo session to signal the end of the meeting at about 11am.

Though, there was no official words as to what transpired during the meeting, a source confided in one of our correspondents in Kaduna that the meeting was not unconnected with the March 28 rescheduled presidential election.

The source said, “This is a closed-door meeting and its doubtful if they will talk to the pressmen. You know they met President Jonathan too. You know, all efforts to turn Nigerians against Gen. Buhari had failed and opinion polls have favoured the old man, even the ones conducted by the government.”

Presidency doubts Mu’azu’s loyalty –Investigation

There were indications that the Presidency may have put the National Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, under close watch, The Punch has learnt.

It was learnt that the Presidency was not comfortable with the activities of the chairman of the ruling party as some members of the party were said to have informed President Goodluck Jonathan of the alleged double-faced activities of Mu’azu.

It was learnt that the Presidency took the action following reports against the former Governor of Bauchi State, Mallam Isa Yuguda that he was not fully committed to the second term aspiration of President Jonathan.

Those against him were said to have informed the President and members of his kitchen cabinets that Mu’azu did not take any action following the stoning of the President’s convoy in some states in the North.

Specifically, he was said to have kept quiet over the stoning of the President’s vehicle in his home state.

The sad event in the state was blamed on the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress, but the state Governor, Yuguga said that those who stoned the President were sponsored by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Bala Muhammed.

The minister is a member of the ruling party.

The Presidency source said, “You can see that Mu’azu has not been vociferous in his campaign for the President in the North.

“He has never organised any rally on his own and has never attended any other except those organised by the party which were attended by the President.

“He has remained silent on the stoning of the President’s convoy in Taraba, Katsina and Taraba states. We have this unclear notion that he’s more interested in having a President from his region than President Jonathan returning. So, we are watching him.”

The source said the sign that Mu’azu could be up to a sinister motive emerged on the day the President inaugurated the party’s Presidential Campaign Council.

“Instead of speaking on the task ahead of the party and the campaign, Mu’azu in the full glare of the television and invited guests, lambasted the President and the party,” he added.

Fire guts AIT studio

Tragedy was averted on Monday morning after fire engulfed the studio of the African Independent Television, Lagos State.

Our correspondent learnt that the fire started at 9am after an air conditioner in the studio was affected by high voltage electricity.

Men of the Lagos State Fire Service from Agege, Ikeja and Alausa divisions were said to have been mobilised to the scene around 9.30am in three water trucks.

Director of Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, said his men arrived the scene 15 minutes after it got a call.

He said it took another 15 minutes to put out the fire.

He said, “The fire was caused by high voltage. We arrived at the scene at 9.30am and we spent about 15 minutes for active firefighting operations.

“Only the AC was badly damaged as we were able to curtail the spread of the fire. The management of the station had also combatted it and they must be commended for having all the fire equipment.”

Fadipe advised residents of the state to be safety conscious, adding that, although the harmattan period was over, the atmosphere is now warm which could also support fire.

APC reports Patience Jonathan to ICC

The presidential campaign organisation of the All Progressives Congress has reported the wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, to the International Criminal Court.

Two weeks ago, Patience had, while campaigning for her husband in Calabar, Cross River State, told the supporters of the PDP to stone anyone canvassing for change in the state.

The campaign organisation said the letter of complaint was signed by its Director-General, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, who is the Governor of River State.

It said that the letter would be delivered to ICC on Monday (today), adding that the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, and the National Human Rights Commission would also be sent copies of the letter.

“Change, as the entire country knows by now, is the slogan of the APC – the rallying cry of a political party that wishes to bring hope of greater and better things to come for Nigeria and Nigerians.

“By her statement, Mrs. Jonathan was clearly calling on the PDP supporters in Calabar to attack supporters and campaigners of the APC in the state,” it said.

The campaign organisation likened some of Patient’s statements to those of Simone, the wife of a former President of Cote d’Ivoire, Laurent Gbagbo, prior to the francophone country’s 2010 elections.

The ICC indicted Mrs. Gbagbo for her part in planning to perpetrate brutal attacks, including murder, rape, and sexual violence, on her husband’s political opponents in the wake of the 2010 elections.

“Mrs. Jonathan does not occupy any formal office in the Nigerian government as the position of the First Lady is not recognised by the Nigerian constitution.

“But Mrs. Gbagbo’s case shows the ICC’s awareness of how someone beyond formal governmental and military hierarchies can be identified as responsible for serious international crimes.

“Patience Jonathan’s incontrovertible hate speech not only contravened the laws of the land, but also went completely against the Abuja peace accord jointly signed by the two presidential candidates, Muhammadu Buhari and President Goodluck Jonathan – a gesture which is aimed at forestalling violence before, during and after the 2015 elections.

"The PDP supporters in the state, who may not know better, could easily yield themselves to the First Lady’s admonition and embark on a process of wanton stoning and other attacks against the APC members"

INEC extends PVC collection to March 22

Independence national electoral commission on Sunday extended to March 22 the deadline for the distribution of permanent voter cards (PVCs), urging registered voters to pick up their cards.

“The collection will continue until March 22, superseding the earlier deadline of March 08,” Kayode Idowu, a spokesman for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), said in a statement.

“The INEC hereby calls on registered persons that are yet to collect their PVCs to use this last opportunity in doing so, in order to participate in the forthcoming general elections,” Idowu added.

Initially billed to end by Feb. 8, the commission extended PVC collection by four weeks after it shifted the election from Feb. 14 to March 28 citing security reasons.

At least 79 percent of the registered voters have collected their cards as at Feb. 27, according to INEC official figures.

On March 28, Nigeria is slated to hold presidential and parliamentary elections.

Although 14 candidates will contest presidency, the poll is largely seen as a race between incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, a former military ruler running on the APC’s ticket

Zambian president collapses, hospitalised

Zambia’s President Edgar Lungu collapsed on the podium while presiding over a Women’s Day celebration in Lusaka – less than two months after taking over from a leader who died in office.
Lungu was rushed to a military hospital on Sunday, but the president’s office later issued a statement saying he had been treated for malaria and there was no need for concern.
“I am feeling much better and have been told I have high levels of fatigue and should take some rest,” Lungu said in the statement.
“There is nothing to worry about.”
Lungu came to power in January after the death in office of President Michael Sata in October.
Rumours that Sata was ill had circulated widely before his death, but were always denied by the government.
Sata was Zambia’s second leader to die in office in six years, sparking calls for presidential aspirants to undergo medical checks to guarantee they are fit.
Lungu, who fell after standing for some 20 minutes during the ceremony, is rumoured to have diabetes, the AFP news agency reported.
Presidential spokesman Amos Chanda said doctors at the military hospital had conducted comprehensive medical checks and said Lungu’s results were good.

Maiduguri blasts death toll rises to 62

The death toll in Saturday’s multiple bomb attacks on Maiduguri rose to 62 on Sunday as four persons, who were injured in the explosions, lost the battle to stay alive, a hospital source told our correspondent.
Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Clement Adoda, had said after the explosions at three spots in the town — two markets and a motor park — that 58 persons died while 139 persons were injured in the attacks.
    A source, who spoke to our correspondent on Sunday, said, “Due to the gravity of injuries of some victims brought to the hospital yesterday (Saturday), having lost so much blood, three of the injured were lost overnight. Another one was lost this morning before the medical routine checks by the medical doctor on duty.”
    The source, a nurse, who spoke on Sunday evening to our correspondent, said, “We are presently observing the case of one of the victims, who is in critical situation and will need a miracle to survive.
  “Apart from these isolated cases, majority of the victims have been treated and discharged and have since gone home.”
   In a similar development, there was another bomb attack on a market in Borno State, where five persons were said to have been killed on Sunday, a member of the youth vigilante group, who craved anonymity, told our correspondent on the telephone.
    He said, “The insurgents planted a bomb at the Beneisheikh market around 10am on Sunday. This led to the death of five persons while 15 others were injured.
    “Today, being the market day of Benisheikh here, villagers do come to buy and sell grains and others goods but they had bad news to tell as a bomb, suspected to be planted by a suspected Boko Haram insurgent, exploded.”
    He said the casualty could have been higher if the bomb had been planted within the market.
    A resident of Beneisheikh, Modu Gana, told our correspondent, “We saw the dead bodies being conveyed to Beneisheikh hospital and those wounded were assisted by the civilian JTF to the hospital.”
